I'm talking purely using him as a pitchman for products. McNair, Wycheck, George, Kearse, Fisher, and VY all had plenty of cash coming in for endorsements around the city. CJ has had one or two since he's been here.

Im not speaking on his football contract situation at all.

Love or hate Vince Young reebok was willing to put millions of dollars behind pushing a VY Reebok shoe. Nobody has been willing to have Chris Johnson as the image of their product.

We have a reporter at the office with a ton of tattoos. He can never wear a short-sleeve shirt during the summer, other than when he does my job on Sunday nights. He can never wear shorts. Tattoos on the neck or face are simply not accepted. I think tattoos are tacky, but don't care one way or the other if people have them, but a lot of people you deal with in real life do.
We can't send someone out to represent the newspaper who looks like he just got out of prison.
Our advertising manager has a small tattoo on her ankle. She exposes it all the time, but it is very small and I doubt it would offend anyone.

Look im not buying any more Oreos because Peyton and Eli Manning are on the commercials, but thats what corporate America wants to sell.

Earrings dont bother me and the reason Lebron James can pull off the tats is he is still clean cut and charismatic. If you have tattoos its not a big deal to me, but selling the wholesome image is what the public wants to see. VY was smart about it he is tatted up but its where you can cover most of them with normal clothes. Of course Lebrons tattoos are going to be visible when its a basketball related commercial, but im saying the commercials and ads he does when hes out in the street pitching insurance he is well covered. I think the tats and piercings thing took on a life of its own, my main premise is that people want "clean cut" looking guys to push their products. To me Lebron James has tattoos but still has a positive image, a guy like Robert Gallery with many tattoos and long hair looks like a biker gang reject but hes probably a nice guy.

Its hilarious to hear Lebron James doing drops on the old G Unit Radio Mixtapes dropping the N word. Whoo Kid played them recently on his show and got a cease and desist letter from BronBron's lawyers. Its not like he's slandering Lebron James by playing something that Lebron clearly recorded himself but it hurts Lebron's image so LBJ had his lawyers stop it. It was something a normal 18 year old would say on a Whoo Kid mixtape, but he doesnt want McDonalds and Allstate getting wind of something like that.




In a perfect world Chris Johnson could just do the Choppa City Juke and sell lawnmower blades or some other random product, but good luck getting most companies to put their dollars behind him.

I'm not disagreeing with you here, Diivox. But perception is everything. On a personal level, I don't care if someone has tattoos, but if 80% of our customers feel the opposite, there's a problem. If we have an ad salesperson who is ultra-intelligent, but can't sell an ad because of pre-conceived notions over a tattoo, it's a problem.
 
If im a company and im looking for a team or player to pitch my product there is no question which one im going with.

The guy holding the trophy and who is one of the top runningbacks in the game? Cam Newton could be a steaming pile of shit and get benched for Clausen. I wouldn't hire a guy who would get replaced by Clausen.

Again, I'm not saying I personally agree, but at the end of the day the customer is always right. If 80% of my customers say tattoos make someone look criminal, the customer is always right.

on what statistical data do you base the 80% of NFL fans not wanting a guy covered in tattoos? i tried to google data to counter your argument so I'm not gonna go off too hard based on speculation. That being said, I'm gonna go ahead and guess the average football fan could care less if somebody is covered in tattoos. this corporate argument is nill ; at best it applies to naming rights of a stadium. corporate sponsorship is to the players benefit.

it's a rich old white guy who owns the team. and he certainly has the right to say what he wants to his players. Tom Yawkey was a rich old white guy and his racism made the Red Sox the last team to employ a black baseball player, which resulted in 17 years where his team failed to finish within 10 games of first place. he had a right not to pay a black guy since it was his team, but he left millions on the table by doing it, and it wasn't the right way to run a baseball team.

I'm pretty sure that this is not a sound business decision and the Panthers definitely haven't won shit in a while, so i'm not even convinced Richardson knows the right way to run a football team, so if I'm wrong based on statistical evidence that you don't present, I'd love to be proven wrong, but... you're just guessing like the rest of us, and i'm guessing this is pretty fucking retarded, even if you want to play the "business" card.
 
And look at the state Basketball is in. They are in trouble, and their popularity is decreasing. The NFL doesn't want that to happen.

What are you talking about? Before the lockout basketball was actually on the rise. Regardless of how you or mainstream America feel about the product on the court NBA athletes are generally considered the most marketable athletes. The NBA being labeled a "thug league" has more to do with Jordan's absence, a poor marketing strategy and what is considered ugly defensive basketball then it has to do with players wearing tattoos. Once the NBA changed some rules and catered to a more offensive game so called fans started watching again.

Regardless though the NFL will never have to worry about being labeled a "thug league," because people actually love NFL football, so mainstream America wouldn't call something thuggish that they by-in-large support. Truth be told percentage wise NFL players are by far more involved with deviant off the field activity than NBA players, yet people still watch and don't label the entire league as thugs.

I don't have a problem with what Richardson is saying, but my point is that athletes/entertainers are held to different standards. Athletes are generally judged by how successful they are....as long as they win fans will love them. Entertainers generally can do what they want.
 
Of course Lebrons tattoos are going to be visible when its a basketball related commercial, but im saying the commercials and ads he does when hes out in the street pitching insurance he is well covered. I think the tats and piercings thing took on a life of its own, my main premise is that people want "clean cut" looking guys to push their products. To me Lebron James has tattoos but still has a positive image, a guy like Robert Gallery with many tattoos and long hair looks like a biker gang reject but hes probably a nice guy.

The marketing strategy has less to do with hiding his tattoos and more to do with dressing the part for the ad. When we think of insurance sales we don't think of basketball players wearing jersey's but instead of people in business or casually dressed. IMO it has nothing to do with the tattoos, but instead the product he's trying to sale.




In a perfect world Chris Johnson could just do the Choppa City Juke and sell lawnmower blades or some other random product, but good luck getting most companies to put their dollars behind him.

I'm not being funny, but have you heard Chris Johnson do an interview? As I said the reason he's less marketable is because he lacks communication and interview skills. CJ tends to be recluse.....much like Marvin Harrison. BTW, Harrison was a clean-cut and HOF player who didn't get many endorsement deals either.............because he didn't have the personality. If CJ was more outgoing and has decent interview and communication skills he'd get more marketing opportunities.

Im using CJ as a hypothetical since he has that "thug" image, but he's never been in ANY kind of legal trouble that i know of. I've heard his limited interviews and yeah he would have trouble pitching products verbally. A loudmouth like Chad Johnson is in lime green pitching Reebok Zigtech shoes while seeing CJ zoom through those obstacles would be better to me. He could do ads like that where he does have to say a word. Just run the cartoon obstacle course, smile and hold the shoe up as it cuts back to a Chris Johnson. Steve McNair was equally as reclusive and equally as brutal in interviews as Chris Johnson and he had plenty of endorsements. From what i understand CJ's agent his been trying to get Johnson and Johnson to use Chris Johnson for years now, is it that hard to put him in a commercial holding a baby smiling then show some baby oil at the end or whatever.

I appreciate the counterpoints you and Pand have brought up. I definitely agree society's views on body art have changed somewhat. Im just saying they havent changed all that rapidly and the old guard still go with what they know. I think the NFL will be a better product when the sons of most of the current 80 year old owners are running the teams.

No it doesn't. The NBA used to be close to king of the hill. Now it's not. I don't even watch it anymore, and Jordan's got nothing to do with it. MANY people don't watch it because to many athletes are out of control and act like wananbe "thugs".

And a poor marketing strategy, like promoting the bad boys?
