The only NBA player that the league marketed that mainstream society classifies as being a "thug" is Allen Iverson. Iverson isn't anything like a thug, but people can believe what they want. Generally the label of "thug" has racial aspects. so I take it as such.

I actually respect Cam Newton more for understanding where Richardson is coming from and not defying him, rather than crying like an entitled bitch as I expect most posters are going to do in this thread or young people would do outside this forum reading this news article.

This is why, despite statistics that say otherwise, the NFL has avoided the "thug" label while the NBA suffers from it. NFL players are just as badly behaved as NBA players. The league is just better at disguising it.

NFL players are also under a suit of armor. The cornrows & tatoos are covered. Everyone looks the same. NBA players are exposed. The cultures are no different. It's just a perception, a perception that Roger Goodell and the NFL deserve a ton of credit for controlling a lot better than David Stern. Stern chose to market to kids, and market to urban demos. Well, that's a double edged sword.

I haven't followed NBA that closely. They may have done better the last couple years. But every source I heard or read says the NFL had a lockout to divide the large amount of $'s from it doing so well, and the NBA needs the lockout because it is not. I heard some teams where in real trouble.

No league wants to admit it, so they'll use their "lack of marketable talent" as an excuse, but the biggest problem is teams have priced out many of their fans. The arenas are now boring, as they're filled with big money twats who are there only for the "prestige" of their ticket. It's no coincidence that some of the best atmosphere's in the NBA are teams with low prices.

Just because you know a person that is an exception does not disprove the point as a whole. Tattoo sleeves are just not acceptable in corporate America and a large part of the population looks down on excessive ink and piercings.

I'm sure corporate America is reeling since you think their policies are lame. Working for the largest communications company on the planet and writing requirements for IT on new product launches/enhancements I can tell you that anybody with sleeve tattoos would be lucky to be hired as a contractor, much less an employee and even then they would not be allowed to interface with the public. I'm glad your company is more open minded but we think billions when your company is thinking millions. Same way with the NFL. /thread

I know several police officers with visible tattoos that need to cover them up. It doesn't look professional when you're in the public eye the way Cam Newton will be. Whether he likes it or not, he (Newton) is a role model now and must look and act the part. Fyi, I am a Panther fan with no tattoos or piercings.
