Belichick is without a doubt one of the best coaches in the history of the NFL, he however is not one of the best drafters. Their biggest prize was pure luck with Tom Brady. His best players are ones that he finds with a certain skill set and can work with (Vrabel/Ninkovich) or top talent like Seymour or Wilfork.

It's not like Belichick didn't try to build a defense, it's that he couldn't connect on his draft picks.

He went 27/41 for 276 yards and 2 TD's... if he didn't have those drops he goes over 300 and wins Super Bowl MVP easily.

I agree with what W2B and ralaw are saying. And I consistently mention how I think things like QB record are stupid, QBs shouldn't be judged by # of SBs and that QBs get far too much credit.

BUT

Out of all the QBs this generation Brady has been the biggest beneficiary of this mentality. Easily. And like I said earlier it's to the point that he still get's praised for being a playoff hero even though he hasn't done well in the playoffs consistently for years. If he's going to be overly praised when his team has success, it's only fair for the criticism to come when his team fails.

I'm a Giants fan and even I think announcing his demise is way too premature. Like has been said, this loss can't be pinned solely on him. There are a number of bigger reasons they didn't win before you get to Brady. I can't even pin the pick totally on him. All year whenever he's had Gronk one-on-one with a LB that's an automatic win. Sure, he threw it a little short but that's a play Gronk comes back to the ball, boxes out the defender and makes the catch. He's done it all year. On that bad wheel, he just couldn't stop and change direction fast enough to do any of that.

Also with this one and the SB in '07, it took miraculous plays late by Eli to win the game. Brady actually drove his team and gave them the lead late before Eli escaping a certain sack and finding Tyree who made a spectacular grab. Last night, they had the lead late again and Eli throws a 40 yard strike, fitting the ball in about a six inch window that Manningham had to hold on to & get both feet in bounds. Like it's been said, if a play here or there goes a different way he has 5 rings or none. He's got 3 and has played in 5. I personally don't think he's the GOAT, but he's still in the discussion.


EDIT: On that safety, it was a bad play but let's be honest. I've seen quarterbacks make that same play a thousand times and never once saw it called intentional grounding.

I'm not announcing his demise. He's still an elite QB, all time great and has been at worst the 2nd best QB in the league for a large part of his career. And will continue to be for at least the next few years.

But people (fans/media) were falling all over themselves giving him total credit for the 3 SB runs. So he gotta take the credit for these loses too. Fairs fair.

LOL you miss the point entirely, it doesnt matter the numbers he got..his true heyday is behind him and he wont ever get the dominance back..it doesnt need to be a blatant drop off for it to be true...Favre had a very good career after 96/97, but the fact is..he never got back in the big game or won another SB..Brady's beaten the odds more than enough but he hasnt won the last 2 and he very well may never get another chance again.

Ok. Thank you for posting in this thread to tell us you no longer want to post in this thread.

And I think it's reasonable to argue that Brady has been choking 05-11. The whole choking stuff is bullshit to begin with, but the label exists and the stuff he's doing fits perfectly within the definition. Backbreaking, game sealing interceptions. Losing at home multiple times. Dropoff from regular season performance to postseason. Big collapses/upsets.

The problem is the narrative is that Brady is a clutch playoff hero, so when he fails excuses get made or people just flat out ignore it. You look at what he's done in the playoffs recently, if other QBs pulled that shit they'd get blasted relentlessly. All I'm asking is when is Brady gonna get that same treatment?

Perfect example was last year when the instantaneous fan reaction, and some of the media reaction was that Manning choked after losing to the Jets. then the very next week Jets go out and do the same thing to the Patriots and those same people are silent.

I'm not even a fan of Tom Brady or the Patriots but I'm not going to deny that he's one of the best QBs to ever play the game. I like how you listed the year he shattered all the regular season records as one that was a failure. When a man's failures are being judged by the amount of Superbowls he doesn't win then that's a pretty good place to be. You're setting the bar impossibly high. He's just one man on a team and he's one of the best to ever play at his position.
