Nobody remembers the massive wet farts Montana layed in the playoffs multiple times. Nor do they seem to remember that he threw a pass directly into the chest of Lewis Billups which would of sealed up a Bengals W, but Billups dropped the ball. It would have gone done as one of the worst passes in SB history, and changed his entire reputation as this supposed "Mr Perfect" in the clutch. I detailed this stuff in the old Manning thread. Montana has become mythical because of the cultural signifigance of the SB. Of course rings matter. You need at least one to be in the conversation. But it doesn't automatically end the conversation. That's shallow and obtuse.
I agree, everyone is fed this image/idea of these players. When I think of Montana I think of the pass to Clark in the end zone. Not the three straight first game knock outs, hell i forget he even played for the Chiefs.
I already said my peace on Favre but I didnt realize the guy won three MVPs in a row.
Elway- I just think of the comebacks. But here are some facts I just found on him.
Over his professional career, Elway led Denver to 34 comeback wins in the 4th quarter & overtime, tied for third with Johnny Unitas.[20]
Elway's 148 wins place him second to Brett Favre for career wins among quarterbacks.
Elway was sacked 516 times, second to Favre for most times sacked in NFL history.
Elway's 300 career touchdown passes places him fifth behind Favre, Dan Marino, Fran Tarkenton and Peyton Manning.
Elway is one of only four quarterbacks to pass for at least 3,000 yards in 12 seasons; Favre, Marino and Manning are the others.
But he has two rings
