Overeem-Lashley not happening cause Lashley wanted too much money

The rumors that Bobby Lashley would fight Strikeforce World Champion Alistair Overeem on New Years Eve in Japan for the Dream promotion have turned out to be just that.

Rumors.

Overeem's camp accepted the fight, but Lashley's camp asked for an amount Dream was not going to spend, and the fight is officially considered "off."

There have been many rumors on who would be Overeem's opponent for this year's Dynamite!!! card, from Satoshi Ishii to recently cut UFC rookie Todd Duffee.

Lashley was last seen in a Strikeforce cage against Chad Griggs, in a lopsided fight which saw Lashley get bloodied and beaten, much like Brock Lesnar against Cain Velasquez.

There have been reports that Lashley's team turned down the fight because there wasn't enough time to prepare, but WrestleZone has confirmed his management team "priced Lashley out of the market," according to one person involved in the negotiations.

The latest rumor out of Japan is that Dream is trying to sign Semmy Schlit to fight Overeem on the New Years Eve show. No word on Lashley's next fight, although the rumors that Strikeforce President Scott Coker wants to sign Lashley vs Batista continue to persist.

Meltzer reported Lashley's outrageous money demands on his website two days ago, and just like clockwork, Wrestlezone "reports" it yesterday.

Add Shinji Suzukawa vs. Bob Sapp in a "IGF rules" fight.

IGF is Antonio Inoki's really bad pro wrestling company that nobody cares about or pays attention to, but everyone swears this will be a legitimate MMA fight, with the "IGF rules" just being used to give IGF some pub, and prepare Suzukawa for his upcoming pro wrestling career. I'm skeptical, especially if Sapp does his usual "get hit once and turtle" routine. This will probably be some sort of worked/shoot designed to make Suzukawa look good, but who knows. I don't trust Sapp or Inoki. Suzukawa is the former sumo who was banned for life for smoking weed, and Inoki thinks he can be a big pro wrestling star. Akibono never became a big star, so this guy has no chance.

Also, Andy Ologun vs. Katsuaki Furuki (the former baseball player) was added.

The Sapp match wont air in Japan because of Suzukawa's marajuana issue, but Meltzer said HDNet is airing the entire show start to finsih.

Also, whoever Overeem fights, it will be for the new DREAM Heavyweight Title. They quietly tried to get Wedum & Bigfoot, but were turned down by SF or the fighters for obvious reasons.

They also wanted to do Fedor/Iishi, but again, SF said no, so they never even ended up talking to Fedor.

I recall Mark Coleman being a part of an IGF event with Tim Sylvia and Josh Barnett a while back.

Todd Duffee was yet another opponent scheduled to fight 'Reem, but he pulled out as well. Unless they dig up Fujita's corpse again, I doubt they find someone brave enough not named Don Frye to fight Overeem on eight days notice.

Yeah, Inoki loves to book former/washed up MMA guys, because Inoki was around (and was largely the catalyst) for the Japanese MMA boom, and during those days the mixed shows with the worked shoots, actual shoots, and prowres were all the rage. The problem, is the worked shoot ship has long sailed, because after years of pro wrestlers taking the large payoffs and getting destroyed in shoot fights, the fans are now too sophisticated and see through it. It doesnt draw anymore.

What a lot of MMA hardcores don't like to hear about, is nearly every big time MMA heavyweight, at one point or another, participated in worked pro wrestling matches. The money was too hard to pass up, and the promoters were the same people. This annoys the fuck out of sherdog geeks, and i'll never understand why.

But anyway, Inoki is still hung up on an era where being a legtimate tough guy helped make you a draw, but even in Japan people recognize the difference these days between work & shoot. That's what largely knocked pro wrestling down a peg in the Japanese culture. MMA exposed the wrestlers, who were/are no longer seen as the toughest men.

Huge risk or reward for Duffee, he obviously suffers from zuffa battered women syndrome, he turns down a fight with Big Foot which more than likely came with a 3 or more fight deal, now he will fight The Reem in Japan

He wins he probably goes back to Zuffa with open arms, but if he losses badly I doubt SF would even be interested in him anymore, the UFC even less
