Justin Upton: All-Star gamer
PlayStation and Biz Markie.
That's how Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton celebrated his second All-Star selection last night in Scottsdale. Markie, the legendary rapper/DJ who is still cashing checks from his 1989 smash "Just a Friend," was spinning tracks while Sony supplied video games in every corner of the club for Upton and his teammates/fellow party goers to enjoy throughout the night.
"This is how we do it," the 23-year-old Upton told me with a huge grin as Markie got the All-Star party jumping with a mix of Jay-Z and Michael Jackson. Then, as Upton and I start talking video games, we glance outside to see some model-type, tight dress and all, swinging for the fences in "MLB 11: The Show's" home run derby. (No wonder when you type in "Justin Upton" on the iPad it autocorrects to "Justin Uptown." You can't beat the combination of models and the PlayStation Move.)
"I'm a huge gamer," Upton said, admitting to bringing his system on the road in order to play "FIFA 11" as Chelsea in the hotel. "I play 'Halo' and the new 'Call of Duty' quite a bit, but lately I'm locked in on 'FIFA.' I can't wait for 'FIFA 12' to come out. I went from 'FIFA 10' to 'FIFA 11' and it was such a huge jump, and I hear that 'FIFA 12' is supposed to be even that much better, so I can't wait."
Aside from "FIFA," Upton says that he plays a lot of "NBA 2K11" while on the road against video game partner in crime, Chris Young. "We play all the time," Upton said with a laugh. "The two of us are always talking about video games. When 'The Show' comes out, we're the two who crack it open the day it comes out so we can joke with each other about our ratings. It's fun, but man, my ratings are terrible. Maybe I need to have a better season so I can get some better ratings next year."
And although Upton has owned just about every system, from the original Nintendo and Sega Genesis all the way up to the PlayStation 3, he still finds time to play the classics.
"A lot of clubhouses still have the old 'RBI Baseball' machines in them," he told me as Biz Markie flipped the track to Kanye West in the background. "We play the old arcade machines any chance we can. I love to play as the Reds in that game. They have to have one of the best teams in 'RBI.'"
Then again, when it comes to playing video games, to Upton, nothing beats the game setup he sports at home.
"I have a 70-inch TV for when I want to play, then I have a room with three TVs for when my friends come over and we're really getting after it," said Upton. "We have Xbox 360s and PS3s setup all over. You can play anywhere in my house.
"And tonight, we even have the games here at my party. We have everything. I love it."
