Blue Jays' Fourth starter flying the coop?

TORONTO, ON -- After sweeping two of the best teams in baseball, the Toronto Blue Jays are back to there mid-April form against the Chicago White Sox. By Mid-April I mean, two runs per game and struggling starting pitchers.

Roy Halladay is not playing such as an ace should and Jesse Litsch cannot get any run support when he pitches. The same story can be told about a similar younger starter -- David Purcey -- who averages a humongous 3.12 runs per game when he pitches. The gem of the rotation has perhaps been Scott Richmond, a British Columbia native who surprisingly leads the team in strikeouts.

Richmond, however, is the least of the roation's problems. The Blue Jays number four spot, won by Casey Janssen in Spring Training now belongs to a 34 year old journeyman who has undergone two Tommy John surgeries and can barely hit 90 MP/H with his fastball.

Matt Clement comes off his most recent start -- a 6-5 Jays loss in which he was responsible for all the White Sox runs -- with an expectation of failure like Janssen before him. Both are erratic early innings pitchers who would benefit a lot better from being late inning set up men then starters. However, on a team like the Blue Jays which is loaded with relievers, they need to take any path to the majors they can and sadly the Jays' crop of young pitchers has grown steadily thin in the J.P. Riccardi era.

In most organizations Clement would be at best a Double-A ace but in Toronto he was fighting for the third spot in the rotation late into Spring Training. He was only sub-par in Triple-A Las Vegas, going 2-2 with a 3.79 ERA in 5 starts against minor league hitters. In fact former Baltimore Oriole Brian Burres had been having the better season in Las Vegas but Clement was called upon because of the experience factor. Experience certainly hasn't helped him last, at best, five innings and have an ERA of 7.97 through his first two starts of the year -- versus New York and Chicago.

Before Clement, Janssen was a sure bet to be out of the game by the sixth inning and would usually be on the hook for four or five runs a start. The Jays knew he was more suited to a relievers role but kept him in the roation hoping he would undergoe a Richmondesque transformation. No dice.

Now Janssen is toiling as the number four -- irony at it's finest -- starter in Triple-A with little to no shot at making it back to the majors with the Blue Jays. Expect the same for Clement when he is sent back down in Late-May/Early-June. Hopefully when the Blue Jays send Clement back down, they choose the best player and not the local favorite or the one everyone feels sorry for.
