I wonder when the PSN is back up if the hacker community will try again full force to bring it down again....ugh it would interesting if they did but again it would suck.

Has Sony gone after these guys that have hacking into it? I imagine this is a pretty serious crime?

You are correct. In my eyes PS3 ( I know everyone jizzes their pants for Blu Ray (overrated feature IMO) is a paperweight if PSN doesn't work/exist. I would of never bought PS3 if they didn't have PSN plain and simple.

Blu ray is not overrated IMO. Superior picture and sound to DVD for most movies (debatable for some of the older titles). You're wasting your HDTV if all you do is watch DVDs or streamed video IMO. The quality between them isn't close.

Now, anyone who buys a PS3 solely for blu ray is dumb. At one point a few years ago, it may have been the best deal for a BR player, but today, you're better off buying a standard BR player if that's all you care about.

sidenote. i love my ps3 but i am not gonna pretend that this problem isnt a big one. you guys want to act like its gonna get resolved but its not. they can patch it and offer security protection all they want. but make no mistake, all the patches in the world can not stop the hackers from causing a shut down again.

if they were in the US. but the laws of the US dont apply in other countries. im not sure how it would apply in this situation

To your 1st point, thats pretty much what i am saying. Sony can patch the issue and build a more secrure PSN to avoid the customer info being exposed. But what they cant do is stop the hackers from jailbreaking the system.

Mr Bill posted how MS basically is ignoring the people who use a modded 360 now by not allowing them to play games online. Sony should be able to follow that suit as well, but from what I read about the exposure issue is they might not even be able to stop that

to put it in lamens terms. Think of the PS3 as a lock to your house. its like giving someone the keys to your house. They break in using the keys. you put up barriers to stop the break ins but eventually they can get past the barriers. So you know the only way to stop the break ins is to install a new piece of hardware....that being a new lock.

Sony cant issue new hardware to all of its users. So they are fucked. They can add barriers via patch, but eventually they will be broken into again because the hackers have the keys to their house

in a manor of speaking, it seems like sony has torn down the house and is building a new one (PSN)...but like i said, from what i read it seems like the new house is being built around that old lock that must be replaced. And i dont see sony replacing millions of consoles.

If you were an online only gamer, wouldn't you go for Live because of the quality of online gaming there vs PSN? I'm thinking that if I'm buying a console, games, controllers. That I wouldn't have an issue with whatever the fee is for Live (and I don't) if I were an online only gamer. The choice to go with PSN because it's free over Live because it's not seems far fetched.

Not if you are a fan of Zipper, God of War. I owned a PS2 for 6 years and still haven't spent a dime on Microsoft gaming to this day. It's been posted before but I have the same guys on my buddy list from Madden 2003 and SOCOM II so I really don't feel like changing to a whole new user base.

1.Sony does do that. From what I've heard, it was a matter of tricking PSN into making it seem as though they had a devkit, and was then granted access, which sounds like shoddy internal security.

2. Meh, idk about you but I see the console itself as the client. I'm pretty sure they can change "how far they can get into the house". The "lock" is the authentication/authorization method to get to the network, not the console itself.

From how you make it sound, every PS3 holds all of the customer's information..

P.S. I still fucking hate you for end-of-game Marino to Rice deep bombs in APF 2k8.

I'm one of those guys who have one system and play a handful of online games. Hell SOCOM Confrontation was ONLINE only. SOCOM 4 got pushed back months and months two different times. I get to finally play it for 4 hours and now were going on 3 weeks of no psn. Hell I bet it's gunna be over a month with no PSN. I really can't be surprised anymore by this.

It is no big deal because this could have happened to anyone. nintendo, microsoft etc. Hackers are pretty much able to get into anything and everything they want for the most part. When the breach occurs Sony had to re-evaluate their platform and come up with the right changes so that this won't happen again. It isn't like this can happen overnight, they pretty much are changing a huge part of the network they built. Everyone can sit here and bitch and moan, cry about how they paid for PSN blah blah. 2-3 weeks of downtime because some assfuck hackers went in and compromised the system and Sony has to rebuild PSN doesn't bother me maybe because I am in the field of IT and understand better at what they are going through. I don't know what you people bitching want? Just reboot the shit they have and let people have your information? Rebuilding a secure infrastructure doesn't happen overnight. Once they have it built they need to test the whole system. How long do you expect them to test? Overnight? For fucks sake if you don't like it go buy an Xbox nobody really cares. At least I don't.

What have I defended? On the contrary. This thing is a clusterfuck of epic proportions. This issue is a HUGE one. I've said numerous times that identity theft is a fucking nightmare to deal with.

The only thing I "defended" was Misogi's post when you basically assumed he was unqualified and didn't know wtf he was talking about. The only other thing that could've possibly been construed as "defensive" by a single minded guy like you is when I told all the 360 fanbots to not overlook when Live went down for a week back in 2007-2008. I even clarified that the only issues the two had in common was an outage. I merely said to the 360 Defense Force that it's not like Live has never had an outtage. And of ocurse they came out in full force and said "It was never completely out. It was just slow!" BULLSHIT.
