'Redskins' stripped of trademarks

this is kinda funny..........

25-30 years ago, when people said "Indian", we knew exactly who we were talking about - now referred to as Native American (Indians)
BUT
nowadays; we say "Indian" - we think of the hundreds of Patels we know (that are not related) and the smell of Curry.

WTF are you talking about? Are you high? I didn't even make an argument one way or the other about the offensiveness of the name. In fact, all I've said in the thread is that they should just change it, because no one that is mad about the change will actively care in a meaningful way.

I just take issue with someone going out of their way to censor the word in a discussion about the word for no conceivable reason. Are you concerned that someone is going to enter a thread about the Redskins, see that you typed out Redskins, and be offended?

I don't feel comfortable using racist terminology. how hard is that to understand? If i was worried about not offending people, I wouldn't have entered a thread with multiple people who are defending the usage of the word and gone directly at their bullshit arguments.

I don't feel comfortable using racist terminology. how hard is that to understand? If i was worried about not offending people, I wouldn't have entered a thread with multiple people who are defending the usage of the word and gone directly at their bullshit arguments.

Nothing is inherently wrong with it, per se. But in this case, the word Indian is predicated on a mistake made by Columbus that everyone that finished elementary school knows about. At that point, people are just using the wrong word. Like say, people that use ain't, despite knowing it's not a word, because it's now recognized in the dictionary.

The word is correct and proper English unlike aint, even if the origin behind the word was misguided. But, there is debate over the meaning behind the name, personally I don't think it's an issue either way. As long as it's not derogatory, which I don't feel Indian is.

I neither support nor am against the name change. Its not my battle to fight. I am personally not offended by the term "Redskin", and the only time I've ever used the word is in reference to the football team, but I am a callous white guy who has done terrible things to non-whites so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

If it were up to me, I would have the Redskins revert back to their original name of Braves and be done with it.

It's not meant to be a direct comparison, it's meant to say that just because a lot of people use a word, doesn't make it correct. Indian very naturally means "person from India". It's why Columbus originally called them Indians. He thought that he was in India. It being derogatory isn't important. It's the fact that it's used to describe a group of people that are by their very geographical nature NOT Indian.

If someone blindfolded me and told me they were taking me to China but they really took me to Korea, that wouldn't make the Korean people Chinese, and I'm pretty sure someone would say I was using the wrong word if I called them Chinese.

So explain Red Mesa High School in Arizona still naming themselves Redskins, despite the school being 99.3% Native American and the school superintendent being full-blooded Navajo. The school is also located on a reservation as well.
