People like drama they can understand. I don't think the casual fan cares about the drama regarding whether or not something was offensive or defensive pass interference. The casual fan doesn't know the difference between the two, really. They want drama in terms of personalities or solid football, not drama based on a 15 yard penalty being given 27 yards instead.

how about the increased number of fighting on the field and the refs inability to control that.....even casual fans like Senser, W2B and Nahste can see that.

Apparently, there's been talk from NFL gamblers that they're not betting because the games are not called with any consistency.

The NFL and NFL Referees Association are back at the bargaining table today, less than 12 hours after the Seattle Seahawks topped the Green Bay Packers on a nationally televised “Monday Night Football” debacle.

Albert Breer of the NFL Network reports the sides talked on the phone Monday and are meeting in person today after weekend meetings that involved Commissioner Roger Goodell.

At stake right now are pensions. Breer reports officials are open to a 401k plan for new officials but they want current referees grandfathered in with the current pension plan. The league apparently is unwilling to do that at this point.

Pay also remains an issue but according to Breer the sticking issue right now is pension. After Monday’s sham in Seattle it will be interesting to see if the NFL’s 32 owners are motivated to get a deal done before Week 4 begins.

It bothers me more that the NFL signs $28 billion dollar TV deals and still doesn't offer pensions to its full time employees. You would think a player's lockout where the owner's were able to totally de-value the dollar amount available to franchised players and institute a rookie scale would free up enough money alone for those pensions. I blame the NFL for trying to do things on the cheap more than I do the employees that are just trying to get a piece of the MULTI-BILLION dollar pie they are a part of.

The horrible treatment of ex-players, the concealing of knowledge of how much the head trauma in the NFL was causing to players for years, prominent ex-NFLers shooting themselves in the chest for the sole purpose of donating their brains to science to show how much damage their career had caused to them and bountygate.

The NFL has more black eyes at this point than at any point I can remember.

It requires Full Time attention. My assertion is it does not receive it. My understanding has always been that refs are not obligated to be anywhere or do anything in particular for X amount of hours. They are trusted to go through the hours of film and the only real mandates are meetings and such.

I agree entirely on your NFL black eyes. I just think the NFL is going to pass over a major opportunity to fix the system simply to penny pinch.
If Roger was up in arms saying the Refs are inconsistent !,we need more for our money ! , things should be performance based ! etc Id be behind him and this situation 100% . But he only cares about the money aspect and in that regard the Refs pension and job insurance asking is ridiculous. They basically want to be treated like the supreme court with infinity job assurance and pension. Fuck them as horrible as they are they dont deserve it.

Twitter is about to break tonight. If the NFL doesn't get the officials back by next weekend, people should seriously consider a boycott.

I read through this entire thread to see what everyone was posting, while anxiously waiting for post GB MNF posts. Going to be real interesting to see what W2B has to say after this weekend.

The league needs to double the fines, and potentially consider suspending the players who have gone insane on twitter. Allowing the players to react like this towards officials only makes things worse. These guys need to be muzzled, and fast. You can not let the inmates run things.

These refs have been bad, but shame on the players for the lack of respect being shown. Same for the coaches. It only exasperates the issue, and whips goofball emotional fans into a frenzy.

So lets blame the horrible calls on the field on the players? I do agree the players should show restraint on twitter, but shouldn't the replacement officials (who I think are doing the best job they can, but are way over their head) should be taking the blame for all the "goofball" frenzy? And really, "goofball" frenzy? Also blame the NFL and Refs union for this "frenzy"?

The replacement officials have been just flat out bad. Not passable, or almost as good as the real officials. They have been flat out bad.

Way it with me W2B, I WAS WRONG, they have not been passable, they have been BAD. You can feel bad for them all you want. I feel bad for them. They aren't trying to be bad, they just are. Say you were wrong and I'll gain some more respect for you.

Chris Mortenson is reporting that a deal is "at hand" and that the real officials will be on the field Sunday. Looks like tomorrow nights game will be the final appearance for the replacement refs.

I thought I read that it would take a few weeks for the refs to get ready, because they would have to have some meetings and conferences to go over some of the rule changes and whatnot?
