Bowl Game Preview: Capital One Bowl

Orlando, FL - I am still amazed at how one season can change the entire outlook of a team. The Florida Gators, last years losers in the BCS National Championship (resulting in a #2 final ranking), this perennial powerhouse fell to 8-4 and slipped out of the Top 25 for the first time in who knows how many years. On the other hand, Indiana has stayed in the top 25 all season for the first time....ever.

"The tides have turned, and for the first time I know what it's like to be the underdog," said Florida Gators quarterback John Brantley, who won Gatorade National Player of the Year in high school. "And I like the feeling. It means that when we win, it will be considered a huge upset. I like upsets."

On the other side of the equation, Indiana's just as happy to be the favorite to win over a tough Gators team. "My goal when I started coaching here was to turn around this team," said head coach Anthony Thompson. "If we win this game, I will have succeeded in making the Indiana Hoosiers a football power."

Now how will the game turn out? Let's find out.

What Florida Needs to do to Win

Offensively: The Gators need to get Jeffrey Demps involved in the offense. Aside from a 2 game stretch in which they gave up 451 rushing yards (both losses), Indiana has given up an average of 52.4 rushing yards per game. Unless Jeffrey Demps rushes for 90+ yards, Florida will be in trouble, since John Brantley isn't a good enough quarterback to lead the Gators to a win.

Defensively: If Florida expects to win the game, they have to do two things defensively: they have to shut down Damarlo Belcher, and they have to get pressure on Jammone Chester. Every time Indiana gets stuck with a second or third down and long, Belcher catches a first down pass. It never fails. Also, Jammone Chester only throws interceptions when he's forced to throw the ball. If Florida gets pressure on him, Indiana will throw interceptions and Florida will score points.

What Indiana Needs to do to Win

Offensively: Indiana needs to get its ground game going. It's a given that Jammone Chester will throw for 300 yards and 2 touchdowns and Damarlo Belcher will have 100 yards receiving and a touchdown, but without Shane Covington running well Indiana is hopeless.

Defensively: Indiana needs to create turnovers and stop the rushing game. In the games that Indiana doesn't create turnovers, they tend to lose the game. Likewise, if they can't stop the running game they can't win the game. If they do both of these things, they'll crush the Gators.


Prediction: Indiana 24, Florida 20

Indiana Dominates from Start to Finish, Wins vs Florida

Orlando, FL - In one of Indiana's best games all season, Indiana dominated the Florida Gators from start to finish en route to a 33-10 victory.

"All-in-all, this was the best game I have ever seen from this team," said head coach Anthony Thompson. "We played very well from the opening minutes to the final whistle, and I have never been happier with the outcome of a game."

Tim Alexander, who had the worst game of his career, was still happy with the victory. "The Florida Gators are a great team, and we proved by beating them that we are one of the best teams in the nation," he said happily after the game. "Even though no one put up mind-boggling stats, we played as a team, which led us to victory."

The first quarter made fans think the game was going to be a close one. Florida struck first, booting a 46 yard field goal just two minutes after the game started. Of course, Jammone Chester led Indiana back down the field for a quick touchdown, giving Indiana a 7-3 lead. This was the closest the game would be the rest of the way, as Indiana went on a 26-0 run to take a 33-3 lead. Florida only scored a touchdown because Indiana sent in the 2nd string defense, and they couldn't keep up with the fast and quick Gators.

Jammone Chester, who was injured in the 2nd half, was named Player of the Game after his 11-17 for 227 yards and 2 touchdown performance. He was not available for comment after the game.

Indiana hopes to continue their Bowl Game winning streak next year.

Report on Coach Anthony Thompson

Bloomington, IN - Over the past two years, head coach Anthony Thompson has turned around the once putrid football program at Indiana University. He took a team that had won three times the previous year and made it into one of the top teams in the nation.

"What he has done with the Indiana program is impossible for any other coach," said LSU head coach Les Miles. "In my opinion, he has made the most impressive turnaround of a team in NCAA history."
