Rumor: Pitt Joining the Big Ten

Yeah, I didn't think that anyone really followed Pitt football...they've kind of been a "nothing" program for about 30 years. Yet here we have a guy WHO NEVER EVEN ATTENDED PITT fighting tooth-and-nail for the concept that Pitt would somehow greatly improve their yearly win-loss record by moving from the Big East to the Big10.

It's almost like a kid who has a middling, 2.8 GPA in high school somehow getting into Princeton, and thinking he's gonna produce 3.5 grades for his 4 years there.

I'm going to prove your point wrong. The only team that has gotten worse over that time was WVU, and they beat us this year so I highly doubt that has any point in why Pitt has gotten better over the last two years.




Not to mention, Cincinnati has gotten better each and every year, which makes the fall of WVU less meaningful.

You can't use records to compare the relative progress of a conference. Why? Because they fucking play each other. At the end of the season, the Big East is always .500 against itself.

And beating up on the MAC (which woldn't even be a top D1aa conference) hardly counts.

Wanny didn't have two shitty classes and then leave the program with nothing. Wanny built it back up with 2 top 15 classes, and solid classes the years after. As well as having another top 15 class this year. Recruiting doesn't always equal wins, but it sure as fuck helps.

UNF doesn't have a football team (and the school I went to play football at was D2). Woy goes to RMU, does that mean anything he says about defending Penn State mean less? You see a BCS game and think Pitt's football team was in good shape at that point. However, real Pitt fans no that isn't the case. Pitt's recruiting classes were never good in Walts stay at Pitt. They were downright terrible his last two years. Let me repeat that for you, they were terrible classes. Wannstedt had one terrible class and one mediocre class, the other 3 were great classes and this years is going to be a great class.


And for the last time, please tell me when I said Pitt would get better in a tougher conference? I said they would win 8 or 9 games, and compete for the Big 10 every couple of years. Tell me how that is better than what they did this season?

Make some coherent arguments, give me some stuff I don't know about Pitt because I've explained to you what happened when Walt left and what has happened the last two years. The secret to winning, have good players. That is what Wannstedt has brought to Pitt the last 5 years.

No, its the opposite. Walt Harris rebuilt the program and had 5 straight winning seasons, culminating in a BCS bowl game. He consistently won at Pitt. Wannstedt single-handedly ruined the program, and was lucky to keep his job after his third straight non-winning season. Wannstedt has put together back-to-back good seasons, but the Sun Bowl loss to Oregon State and the lack of notable non-conference wins doesn't really indicate "big time program".

My pap and I went to every home game Pitt has had up until this year when I transferred down here. He's had season tickets from 1998 and still has them. I only went to one game this year however.

Walt built up the program while he was there, but the way he left it was just as bad as when he got there. He won a Big East title yeah, but he didn't recruit effectively towards the end which then left the person who replaced him (Wannstedt) in a shitty position. It then looked like Wanny was failing, but really Pitt would have went 5-7 or worse if Walt was the coach because he gave up on recruiting at the end of his tenure.

I've talked to people at Pitt, and my colleague Adam Rittenberg has spoken to Big Ten officials, and everybody says there have been no contact whatsoever between the two parties. Look, it's possible that Pittsburgh could eventually be invited to join the Big Ten. But that day is several months away at the earliest and is no guarantee. For now, there's simply nothing there.

Penn State was expected to dominate the conference when they joined the B10, and with no disrespect to Woy they have a record comparable with Purdue and Minnesota IIRC since they joined the B10.

They had a few down years (as you would expect from any program) but they stepped their recruiting up lately and are back to the forefront of CFB.

Penn State's first 7 years in the Big 10 they went 70-16 and including a 12-0 season in 1994.

In the 20 or so years before they joined they won 2 NC had nine 10+win seasons and ONE .500 or worse season (1988 5-6). They also finished in the Top 25: 15 times. The Top 10: 11 times. And the Top 5: 7 times.

Since Joinin the Big 10(17 seasons)- 147-62. 9-4 average year. 3 titles. 13 Top 25 finishes. 6 Top 10's. 2 Top 5's. Oh yeah... 10-3 in bowl games.
