Rumor: Pitt Joining the Big Ten

Erroneous reports such as one from sports radio host Ben Maller have surfaced that claim Pittsburgh is set to join an expanded Big Ten.

Apparently, the original source was a few student-athletes at Pitt who Tweeted about a meeting during which Big Ten expansion was brought up — or, more likely, not brought up.

Bottom line, a source at the conference reiterated to the Tribune on Monday that the Big Ten will adhere to the timetable it laid out in December — a 12- to 18-month period of analysis. The league will then determine whether it wants to expand and, if so, how many schools it will invite to the party.

If I could link people close to the program I would, but unfortunately they are real human beings and not internet jargon.

Let's be serious for a second, Pitt would not go 5-7 next year or any time in the near future.

Pitt has a great core right now, I can't predict outside of 3 years from now, but the team is solid with Top 20 talent on both sides of the ball, particularly the RBs, WRs, and DL.

To say that Minnesota and NW would beat them is pure exaggeration. They might not go 11-1, or 10-2 every year before the Big 10 Championship, but 9-3 or 8-4 isn't out of the question.

4 wins in the Big 10 are not hard to get - Illinois, Indiana, NW, Purdue, Minnesota? Pitt is better than all of those teams now and heading into the near future.

NW beat Iowa this year who was an overtime away from the Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl. I wouldn't say its out of the question for them to beat Pitt.

Pitt is by far a better program than people think and yeah they have been down recently, but that doesn't change what Wannstedt is doing in the present. I'm not saying "Pitt's gonna own the Big 10 every year" because that is retarded. Hell we haven't won the Big East since '04. I'm simply saying that Pitt would be successful and have multiple 8, 9 win seasons. Not to mention, they would get a lot more recruits being in the big 10 which would further improve those great classes that Wannstedt brings in.

I guess its not out of the question, but I don't see how/why anyone outside of Pitt would think that. Northwestern has been more successful than Pitt in the last 5 years since Wannstedt arrived. Minnesota has been on par with Pitt.

Pitt would immediately be one of the lower-tier teams in the Big10 if they were to join. I'd have them in the Michigan State/Minnesota area.

And then you have Pitt playing a 3-game stretch against Michigan State, Purdue, and Minnesota, with 2 of the games being on the road...and you have Pitt winning all 3 games??!! I think 1-2 would probably be more like it.
