Just to make sure im following, so a fight is equivalent to a motivational speech?

I'm not saying it is, I'm just showing how a speech doesn't work during a live game. Feel free to take that up with whoever is making that point.

Can't recall the last time I saw a player lose teeth in a hockey fight so it's tough to say.

So pro athletes who are known to completely tune out crowds of 100,000 people because they are that into their roles and responsibilities as a player, can just get into listening to someone scream about kicking ass, while doing just that?

This is stupid, it's not going to have the effect. The fans don't hear it, therefore don't get involved into anything from it, the players are either hopping on and off or are on the ice, so they won't hear anything........and I wasn't aware that only Canadians knew that "talk is cheap"?

You know what, the hockey guys have a point about the people complaining about the fighting. I don't know much about hockey either but I'm not in here trying to act like I know how to fix everything.

No one ever said it would fix everything.

If they players are OK with the inherent injuries that go along with fighting, and so are the actual fans from what I can tell, then who really cares what the people who aren't going to watch/buy tickets have to say?

Would you feel this way if the NFLPA decided they wanted to reallow h2h hits?

NFL Olineman can hear their QB in louder situations on the field.

So yes I think NHL players could hear their teammate yelling on the bench if they were sitting within 20 feet of him.

The point with the attendance is showing what a pro athlete can tune out of. You act is if hockey players on the bench are just picking their nose doing nothing like in Football, Baseball, Basketball and Soccer.

Everyone is an active player who needs to be ready to go instantly, this is a game of 45 second shifts with live substitutions in case you weren't aware.

I don't consider a couple of guys making a mutual agreement to drop the gloves and have at it the same as Brandon Meriweather decapitating someone with a blind side hit so in my opinion your analogy is poor.

It doesn't because nobody agrees to be illegally hit where as two players will agree to illegally fight.

Although calling fighting illegal because it's a penalty is rather odd, since the act is allowed to happen.

They know when the shifts are coming generally They don't need some Lombardi or Any Given Sunday speech on the bench. It could be 10-15 seconds of raving lunancy...sometimes the length of some of these "needed" fights.

Well not everyone is going to get the message, and again, the crowd isn't.

Saying "lets kick some ass" is not quite the same as actually showing you have the balls to go to do.

Is it not inspiring to watch your associate/friend/teammate get into a physical altercation on your behalf?

Are championship teams not about players who put everything on the line for the sake of winning? So when your team's captain is pissed off the team is dragging ass on their 3rd road game in 4 nights, says fuck this shit and drops his mitts with another team's goon to show his boys he's going to do whatever it takes to get going? There's nothing inspiring about that?

Yelling on the bench doesn't do this. A fight will.

Fighting in hockey is also respectful, which all non hockey fans will not understand because they simply don't know. Fighters have zero intention of seriously hurting the other fighter. No fighter is out there looking to knock someone out cold, save for the rare asshole....who is always punished.

Glen, I'm not trying to fix anything. I just think the hypocrisy of these leagues is funny. Mostly the NFL, but partially the NHL as well.

If people want to get brain damaged I have no issue with that, I enjoy watching fighting. I prefer two people who know what the fuck they are doing as opposed to two douche's that can't fight trying to throw blows on ice skates but to each their own.

I actually don't mind hockey fights, but I don't understand the staged fights. Like when a player gets too aggressive and injures an opposing player the next game that player is the target of a goon....only he knows it and everyone else knows it. It happened a few weeks ago......the match started and the goon skates over to the player, they both drop their gloves and fight......IMO the goon lost, and the guy just raises his hands and skates away. Lesson learned?

Another time I recall Barry Melrose talking about retaliation in the playoffs and he said it would be stupid to get retaliation during a playoff game. They were specifically talking about a playoff matchup where a player got injured, because of the actions of an opposing player. I thought fighting was good for the sport and fires people up? I get it though fighting is part of the tradition of hockey and that is why it takes place.

Does hockey have a danger of simply being on the bench? Yes.
Would that require a heighten sense of attention to the game at hand? Yes.

What sport can compare?

Baseball is the only sport that has a danger, all other sports do not.
No other sport substitutes during live play.
