Okada vs. Goto was incredible as well. They had the disadvantage of following directly, but they got the crowd back to that level. Deep down, I don’t think anyone really thought Goto would win. And the heel champion was the crowd favorite. To me, this may have been the greatest performance of Okada’s career. He’s had better matches, but they were with Tanahashi, the best in the world. This was Okada playing the role of world champion against a contender, but not the top contender, and giving you a match put in a bad position and bringing it home as big as you can.
A key to the match is that Katsuyori Shibata was in Goto’s corner. The American finish would be that Shibata would cost his high school friend the title by screwing him at the end. The Japan finish was he rooted him on, the guy gave all he had, but in the end, Okada proved himself as the real champion. Okada and Shibata had a face-off, which likely builds a championship match on 4/6 at Sumo Hall in Tokyo for the annual Invasion Attack PPV. That show would take place the morning of WrestleMania.
The match wasn’t announced, as Shibata got in Okada’s face, issued a challenge, and Okada told him he would have to win the New Japan Cup tournament to get the shot.
