I wouldn't be out protesting Vick getting a pet. I just saw this and thought it might bring SOME activity to the site. And hopefully some intelligent, adult, discussion.

I didn't mean this thread being full of fail. But you thanked me so I don't know. I just think his hope of having a pet someday may turn into fail, because he still may not realize how he can deal with a pet, the media may skew this and ofcourse the animal nuts will go ape on his ass.

I don't know if I was him, I would stay as far away from buying a pet for atleast another 5 years.

Being accepted by a group and actually doing these acts (drowning, electrocuting, beating, basically torturing) are also apples and oranges.

When I started the thread I thought it would be full of fail. Figured I'd be against the VSN world on this. You got thanked cause I'm pretty much thanking everyone that replies with something other than trolling.

That's the thing. Do they know it's wrong or do they simply know that the main culture thinks it's wrong. It may not be an act of knowing it's wrong so they go underground..it may have more to do with an aspect of their culture that they don't view as wrong moving underground to preserve it from the culture that tells them that it's wrong seeing it.

The environment doesn't teach these kids that it's "wrong" to them. They teach them that other people see it as wrong so you have to conceal it from those outside your social and cultural setting.

Not really in the context of this discussion. If it's acceptable in that culture it's more likely that it will be done as no one will tell you to not do it when you participate.

Adding to what FT said as bad as it sounds the acts of drowining, electorcuting and beating dogs isn't the focus of the activity of dogfighting, but instead a result of the training and competition of dogs actually fighting. Unlike humans dogs aren't trained to be tactical fighters.....in dogfighting generally the meanest and most aggressive dog wins....and you obtain that behavior by crude acts.

I buy this if you are talking about illegal car racing were no one is intentionally hurt/killed. There is no real malice here. Maybe some risk of injury/death or some illegal gambling, but no real malice. You are talking about a WHOLE NEW BALL GAME when you are talking about TORTURE.

So torture is a HUGE part of dog fighting? That doesn't excuse the acts of torture or make the acts "Normal".

It's not pointless. Torture is never normal, no matter the environment. Like I said, you and FT have a good point of environment and normal for things that have no malicious intent, like illegal car racing. There is nothing NORMAL about torture.

Agreed. Child molesters and drunken drivers are typically habitual offenders that are have issues mentally in someway shape or form and the issues that are psychological are in many ways incruable.

Which Vick obviously had a drastic moral compass issue with the dog fighting issue IMO it has a different causation than what typically leads to drunken driving and child molestation.

Kids who kill and torture animals are a puddle jump away from being the guy that shoots up a school or kills their girlfriend because she suddenly realized this is one creepy dude and is leaving him.

Adults that kill and torture animals aren't too far off from doing something much more serious. Kind of like the creepy single fuck down the street with a folder on his hard drive called "Game Files" which is actually his secret kiddie porn stash (dave?).

That isn't to say that I think Vick is in that same hemisphere as a kiddie toucher...but lets not make it seem like killing and torturing animals merely needs a recalibration of ones moral compass. It is typically a strong indicator of something much more volatile brewing. Those that surround the dog fighting rings are of the socially non-responsive and the range of outcomes from these types can be all over the map.

With all that said...Vick will, one day, get a dog. If for anything, a PR move along with the ASPCA to show some sort of "total rehabilitation"...some pseudo bullshit, really.

Yay, another Vick debate. Count me in the ralaw camp. Vick's actions led to the suffering of many dogs, but I think he is capable of owning a dog without randomly having an impulse to electrocute it one day.

And what makes you think this with Vick's case? What indications or research do you have? That he has already done it, is a pretty strong indication that he could do it again.
