Except farmers aren't intentionally malicious in there actions. Malicious is not there purpose. The Dog Fighting and the other things he did around the dog fighting were malicious and intentionally malicious. There is a HUGE difference.

I'm a believer in lifetime pet ownership bans for those who abuse animals because I believe on the whole they are likely to re-offend. But do I think Vick specifically is likely to re-offend? Highly unlikely, borderline unthinkable.

Does Vick have any court imposed ban on pet ownership? Don't know. Do I feel sympathy that he can't get his kids a pet? Not really.

I don't think the Vick Process was stupid. Dog fighting should be stopped, even though he really didn't go to prison for dog fighting charges.

Now I support the commissioners right to reinstate Vick, and because of that, support Vick's right to play NFL football, but I would rather have had him banned.

Normal in the sense of dogfighting. The essence of dogfighting is having the meanest most aggressive dog in order to win the fight. I'm not excusing the act of torture, but instead trying to explain to you that the torture of the animals is a necessary evil in the practice of dogfighting.

In the grand scheme of things its understandable that torturing animals isn't normal; however your and Larry's assertion that torturing by means of dogfighting is a sign of greater issues to come isn't entirely true.

Kids who torture animals for fun generally have issues, because there really is no basis or means to an end in, in what they do. These types of people take joy in seeing animals suffer. However, most dogfighters who torture animals are doing so for the sole purpose of competition. I understand torturing animals is a bad thing, but as sad as it sounds this is a reality of of the dogfighting culture.

The Dog Fighting, in this instance, is nearly irrelevant...its the idea that "being led out to pasture" was done by electrocution, hanging, drowning, and beating them to death. This isn't a cattle prod to the head, this is violent, social retards, killing animals in inhumane ways.

At some point people take things overboard. That would've been an extremely severe punishment that doesn't fit the crime at all.

I wish Vick would've been caught running a cock-fighting ring instead. Then the headlines would've been a lot more entertaining, and we wouldn't have to deal with all of this overreaction. He probably would've avoided jail time entirely. Instead he got caught messing with "man's best friend" so now every poodle, terrier and pug owner everywhere wants to hold a permanent grudge against him.

I've been intentionially abstaining from this discussion because I am a diehard Eagles fan and don't want to be accused of homerism, but here's a few thoughts.

Everyone has their own personal standards as to what is morally acceptable and what isn't. I would never down someone for their beliefs in that regard. If you abstain from watching Michael Vick, using products he endorses, and tell anyome with two ears and a heartbeat how heinous his crimes were, have at it.

But let's keep things in perspective. Anyone who puts this crime anywhere within the realm of murder, rape, or child molestation most likely has a bigger problem with Vick that extends further than what he was charged with.

Should he have a dog? Honestly, who gives a fuck? But I will say that he brought the stigma on himself. When you commit a felony, it follows you around. A stigma follows Leonard Little when he goes to a bar, OJ if he posts a profile on match.com, and Michael Vick if he walks into a pet store.

My biggest problem is how our fanbase is being held to the fire a little in the media. I am not the biggest Micael Vick fan, but I believe he has the right to work and try to get back everything he lost.

I'm not going to feel guilty about cheering for him. I've been an Eagles fan for 37 years. I don't feel as though my support for my team condones his actions. I just want to sit on my fat ass on a Sunday afternoon and enjoy watching my Eagles. He's the QB for my team, I don't think I'm a bad person because I can separate the player from the man.

I personally don't think so. Commissioner Goodell (SP?) agrees with you and I respect his decision, so I support Vick's right to play in the NFL. I don't have to like it, but I support it.

The NFL and other sports like the NBA are finding they need to be more image conscious. The NBA has lost a lot of popularity, due partly from image of the NBA athletes. The NFL is desperately trying to avoid image issues. Athletes are public figures and whether they like it or not, how the public perceives the athletes is how the public perceives the sport. The NFL is already suspending, sometimes indefinitely, just for personal conduct.

We should be holding our public politicians to a higher standard as well.

But I still support Vick's right to play in the NFL. Saying that, I would also have supported Vick's banning if that's what the commissioner had decided.

How is it irrelevant when the purpose of the dogs getting tortured was due to dogfighting? You're making it seem as if they're just going out torturing them for the fun of it, which isn't true for the majority of dogfighting cases. In the process of dogfighting the electrocution, hanging, drowning and beating them to death is the end result of a dog that doesn't win. The reason losing dogs are handled this way is because they're obviously too vicious to remain in society as pets. Dogfighters obviously kill animals in inhuman ways, because its not as if they could take the animal to the local SPCA or animal control office.

As for bucky and his question to me why I think Vick wouldn't harm a dog now if he had one and why I think that...IIRC Vick owned dogs during his dog fighting days that he didn't use for fighting that were well cared for and had no issues. He treated them like pets.

He treated his dogfighting dogs like means to an end. He didn't see them as pets so he didn't treat them as such. He thought of them in a completely seperte way. Vick was able to compartmentalize between dogs as pets and dogs as fighters. Pretty interesting considering he couldn't run a WCO.
