Was he a more successful and thus greater athlete (so far) in the annals of time? Absolutely.

You're trying to compare apples and oranges and it's really getting pathetic. I'm glad you love MMA and think GSP is the sweetest thing in the world but you're continuing to try and compare the most successful/talent players of all time in one of the major sports to an MMA fighter who while good, is not in a national class with Wayne Gretzky as far as Canadians go.

Because your bias is on another level of ridiculous. We get it you like MMA. We get it you think GSP is the greatest ever. You're comparing him to a legend in the most popular sport of his home country. How can you even compare the two. If you're talking about purely athletics, then GSP is clearly superior to Gretzky, of course. Every NBA player is superior to every NHL player ever in terms of pure athleticism.

Like I said apples to oranges. It wasn't who is more athletic between the two, it's the greatest athlete (using the term loosley) to best or greatest between the two. It's only now that you've started to use the "athleticism" card, which is stupid because both sports require a completely different skillset, body type, etc.

Bret Hart never greased.

He did, however, illegally use Jimmy Hart's megaphone as a foreign object on several occassions early in his career.

Also scored several victories due to shady officiating by underhanded ref Danny Davis. But to me, this is no different than that unqualified hack Steve Mazzagati "calling it down the middle" on Saturday in the GSP/Alves fight. Jack Tunney would have banned his ass after the Brock/Mir I debacle.

Of course you changed the question. It was who was the best before, now all of a sudden you're asking people "Well who is the better athlete?" which is using the athlete term different. The better athlete is GSP undeniably, the greatest between the two is Gretzky, he accomplished a lot more in his career and is regarded as the greatest athlete in his sport Or am I making things/words up again?

If it's who is the most athletic of the two then GSP by a long-shot, change all of our votes... nobody would still take Gretzky.

Though i disagree FedEx that every NBA is more athletic then every NHL player. In fact I would argue it is the other way around. Not sure of your hockey playing history, but it takes a hell of a lot more to skate, shoot and play with the physicallity that is needed on a sheet of ice then to run up and down a court and shoot a ball. That is just my opinion though. And I will admit, I am a little biased being Canadian and a hockey lover. I at least will admit that.

Hockey takes a ton more technique but I'm not sure it takes more athleticism in it's true definition. NBA guys are freak athletes they can run tremendously fast, jump high, have huge explosive ability. No doubt hockey players are more skilled, more talented and more hard-nosed as they basically play an NBA schedule with football beatings... but in terms of pure athleticism as it's defined (toned, muscular, explosive, fast, etc) it's NBA all the way.

That's absolutely not taking anything away from NHL players, it's just using the term in it's actual sense.

I'd still disagree, but I'm not a basketball fan. We had this debate before because anyone can run, jump, shoot a ball, but not everyone can skate, shoot a good slap shot or wrist shot, and be able to do it all while on ice and getting hit.

Maybe we just have different definitions. To me athleticism or being an athlete is the raw stuff the ability to jump, explode, etc. Yes, everyone can run and jump but not everyone can have a 30+ inch vertical and run a 4.4 40.

I've always thought of athlete as being a raw type of thing, like with college football... you have guys that are recruited as "ATH" or athletes, these guys have all the physical tools but aren't particularly standout at any particular position.

To me that's what the difference is. Even as a HUGE NBA fan, I respect what NHL players do more, they absolutely require more skill, technique, understanding of the game, etc. But to me being athletic does not point to that sort of stuff. It's raw physical tools that define athleticism or athlete to me.

Like I said, we probably just have different definitions.

Probably do. Plus also, you can't really judge how high a hockey player can jump or run since they are not doing it in their sport. But skating fast is just as tough as running, if not more IMO.

I just look at your definition as a little bias because it is geared towards sports that players have shoes on. So that is probably why we have different definitions.

Yeah, and that's definitely likely. Obviously, I'm from Illinois... I'm a huge basketball fan, played it most of my life, huge baseball fan, etc. So of course I'll have a little bias and I'm admittedly not a very big hockey fan either. I respect what they do, but I wouldn't call myself a fan in the least.
