You use "an" in front of (most) acronyms or abbreviations as long as you aren't actually pronouncing the "ND" as a word. It's an abbreviation for Notre Dame. If you can pronounce the abbreviation or acronym as a word like PETA or NASA you can use "a". When using it in front of something like ND, FBI, MRI, etc you use "an". There are cases where youcan use "a" in front of an abbreviation (I believe CIA is one of those) but with "ND" it would be "an".
