you know one thing I have to say is, that if you don't have showtime or HBO, then really WTF are you watching, both networks(for lack of better term) have had the best shows on TV the past 10 years. So really the amount of Free fights is relative, to me they are Free because I won't live without my HBO, but I can see that not being on a major network is a big issue. Honestly I think Boxing only has maybe 2 or 3 fights a year that are worthy of PPV, however they end up doing like 7 or 8. and whats worse is thats just the HBOPPV, thats not talking about the WTF PPV's like when Holyfield was still fighting past his prime, or John Duddy, guys who have no business PPV, but are, also I think Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fights on PPV.. WTF.. its things like this that make people think Boxing is dead.

speaking of Boxing and TV, Oscar is going to be having a show on Versus that is suposed to air Club Fights, should be interesting

speaking of showtime/hbo, this saturday night Strikeforce will be putthin on a very good show, what I like about showtime is they sell boxing and MMA, they are trying to get both fans to watch which I never understood why a boxing fan wont watch MMA and why a MMA fan wont watch boxing

In the end its about combat and fighting, beating another man with different skill sets

I think the problem is the majority of MMA fans came over from pro wrestling, while some are good fans and knowledgable, the majority are idiots

the boxing fan seems to try and be more educated about there sport and the history of it

I enjoy both, always have, but I like almost any form of combat

also, the biggest problem is the boxer vs MMA fighter arguement where it wouldnt really be that big of an issue if you take your fandom out of it and see a MMA fighter trains for what more closely resembles an actual fight and 'should' win, boxing fans take it to much to heart, but its just the truth, anyone who has trained in multiple styles would be able to see that and just accept boxing is the best for hands, but train a very limited form of combat and perfected it and should be proud of that

I have tried to get into MMA, and some of the people I know like both, but I just don't get into it, don't really know why, well i do, but there is no point in arguing, but its probably similar to what you said

EDIT: however it is really funny how anytime I talk about Boxing people always start talking to me about MMA and all i can do is just nod my head

I'm a boxing guy, can't really get into MMA but I see why others do. The problem is boxing is run so ineptly it repeatedly pulls a Plaxico Burress and shoots itself in the leg. I'm from an era where ABC, CBS & NBC all had boxing on nearly every weekend. And I'm talking championship fights & top contenders fighting each other. Now, if we see a fight on ESPN or ESPN2 or the rare occasion on Fox and even much of the HBO & Showtime stuff we mostly get good fighters knocking over tomato cans. And $50 really is too much to pay for a PPV fight for most people.

BTW, whoever said Mexico doesn't count as far as sports is concerned should pay attention. Mexican fighters have loyal followings that shell out plenty of bucks for their PPV fights both in Mexico and in the US.

yeap, thats why the UFC was trying to push Roger Huerta at 1 point, they need a latin/mexican cross over star, closest they had was Tito when he was repping the American and Mexcian flag, but he was more the Hunnington Beach Bad Boy image

Best they have now is in the WEC, Miguel Torres who is the best 135 fighter around, but the WEC isnt a PPV show yet, just on Versus

I would also add, that it will be a tough market (the mexican boxing fan) to crack for MMA, first MMA always goes for the bigger weight classes and the UFC has never pushed the lower weight classes and thats where the better mexican fighters usually fight in boxing

plus its just not there sport, boxing fans usually dont like anything with grappling, its almost a cultural thing

mexican, puerto rican, black american, dont like grappling, never really liked wrestling (real wrestling, not pro), the countries and cultures that like MMA have always done well in or accepted wrestling/grappling, white americans (but has produced some great black wrestlers), the eastern block countries (russia, etc...) japan, only reason brazil is down with it is because BJJ started in Brazil

Look at the best fighters in MMA, russian, white, brazilian, japanese

Generally from my experience across the country where I have lived, hispanic and black people dont like grappling, they much rather watch boxing and never really opened up to any forms of grappling

the grappling aspect IMO seems almost boring... it is why i dont get really into MMA... i understand the complexity and skill of it, but man, in the wrong hands it can be very boring to watch, almost like a boxing match where there is a ton of holding.....ugh... just get after it already....

you didnt need to put 'j/k' because it probably never will, I dont see it happening for a real real long time, maybe if a break out cross over star hits, but still dont see it happening anytime soon

you dont see that many hispanic or black kids really into wrestling in school and thats where it starts for the most part

also boxing gyms are cheap, if you go to a BJJ or a gym that has MMA training it usually is over a $100 a month, its more of a white collar sport to start training in or guys jump over straight from high school/college wrestling to get there cheaper training and start right away as a 'fighter' and dont have to pay any fees at a MMA gym

not to say hispanic and black people dont have money, but the majority of boxers or fighters are poor as kids and get into training early as a way to get off of the streets, a parent isnt going to shell out $150 a month to give a kid jiu jitsu lessons when they can just go to the boxing gym for cheap

if you go to a BJJ class or gym and see who is training, its usually 20 year old ex wrestlers or 30 soemthing year old white guys that come straight from the office because the BJJ coaches know they can get 100 bucks a month and its still a new sport and the only way to have a gym that makes money is to charge those high rates

unless you're in the more rural parts of the country and its all the ex wrestlers beating on each other, lol, the prices are not as high, but they usually dont have the 'hot' bjj coach like a renzo, marcelo or all the guys on the coasts

These threads are always exactly the same. The boxing guys take passive aggressive shots at MMA, while remaining cordial and polite. The MMA guys hold back, not wanting to offend the boxing guys. And nobody hits the main point...

Which is:

Boxing has less than a half dozen (that's being genorous) real draws, all of which are on the downside of their careers. PBF & De La Hoya are bigger draws than anyone in MMA. But they do nothing to build new stars.

The UFC is a far more consistant draw than boxing, because they build stars better. Randy Couture disappears for years, no problem. Dana White sends Chuck Liddell, his washed up biggest draw, to the retirement home. Why? Because he can.

And this point, which the boxing heads must accept, whether they like it or not:

Boxing is held in higher regard mainstream for one reason: the current batch of sportswriters grew up with it. When that generation dies/retires, a new generation of people covering sports will have grown up on Griffin/Bonner, and won't give two shits about Ali or Louis or Marciano. There are journalism majors all over the country who consider MMA a major sport, and consider boxing on the fringe. And those guys will control the internet and the newspapers and the networks.

Until boxing learns how to build stars, they are in deep, deep trouble. It's too late to save it for the next gen. MMA already won that "battle". It's over.

boxing does not suck, the biggest mistakes they made have been the network deals, etc...just to hard to always watch on PPV or HBO/Showtime, most average fans cant keep up when its hard to watch, you need to put effort into being a fan of boxing and most people dont want to do that
