Vilma, Hargrove, Smith, Fujita suspensions overturned on appeal

The four players suspended by the NFL for their involvement in the New Orleans Saints "bounty" program have had their suspensions overturned by a collective bargaining agreement panel, an NFL Players Association source said Friday.

Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma was suspended for the entire 2012 regular season, free agent Anthony Hargrove for eight games, Saints defensive end Will Smith for four games and Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita three games.

Fujita and Hargrove were played for the Saints during the program duration which ran from 2009 to 2011 under defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who has been suspended indefinitely. The suspensions of Williams, coach Sean Payton (season-long suspension), general manager Mickey Loomis (eight games) and assistant head coach Joe Vitt (six games) were not involved in this appeals process.

The NFLPA wins the battle, but they will be blasted in the media. NFL can say they suspended to help protect players from other players, then used technicalities in courts to get their union players away without punishment. It won't be completely true, but it doesn't need to be true for people to make a conclusion about the matter.

The panel ruled that Goodell did not have the jurisdiction to suspend the players.

Well, this opens up a gigantic can of worms. If the commish does not have the power to suspend in situations like this, then the inmates are running the asylum.

The inmates ran the asylum for the majority of the Tagliabue era (IMO) and do not like Goodell's attempt to restore control to the commissioners office.
