Not sure what else Paterno was supposed to do. The GA told his boss (Paterno), Paterno reported up to his boss (the AD). I guess he could have banned Sandusky from the facilities, but this is a situation where you have guys who have been friends for decades and there is a good chance Paterno didn't even believe what was told to him by the GA.

Paterno followed the chain of command and reported up. If more information comes out and it turns out he was part of the cover up, then yeah, he has to go and should probably go to jail, too. But at this point there is nothing out there to support that.

From reading the article and facts it sounds like to me the school was trying to cover it up for the betterment of the program/school. They tried to handle it in-house is hopes of it not getting out. I'm not sure about you, but if someone came to me and told me a good friend was seen, subjecting a boy to anal intercourse I'm going to confront them and the police.

LOL, even if Paterno "did his part" and just reported it up......he never wondered what happened with it? Your good friend was accused of raping a 10 year old boy and he never wondered what happened with it? He never confronted his friend who already had a history of this?....10 years passed? Give me a break. This isn't some NCAA violation......this is a serious crime that the school and Paterno obviously were trying to keep in-house. Everyone involved should be fired and probably jailed.

I could easily see Joe Pa saying he wanted nothing to do with it....because he knew him for so long. You never want to think a friend or coworker could do such a thing. I think he should step down, it's already a shame if he did know and the school did nothing...allowing him to continue and break the record for wins.

Edit: if he did report it to the AD, why let him go to bowl trips? The fact that he reported him, must mean he tought there was some truth to it.

I don't think Paterno should be forced to resign because he told his superiors immediately after being made aware of what the GA had witnessed. Even if something else comes out, unless it involves Paterno coming in contact with a minors penis, he gets to finish out this season and retire. I just hope that Paterno doesn't feel like he needs to come back for one more year just to make sure people know he wasn't forced out at the end of this season for any potential cover up in this scandal.

With Curley out the door, there's no chance at JoePa coming back after this season. It also should dismiss the chance at JayPa somehow getting the HC job.

You're Joe Paterno, how do you just (apparently) wash your hands of the situation and move on like nothing happened, friend or not. At best, it's a false accusation. At worst, it corrupts the program and stains JoePa's reputation.

I find it kind of funny though that posters here (Ohio State and Michigan guys) are so quick to light their torches and drive the guy ouy of town. At this point he is not charged with any crimes and followed the protocol of Pennsylvannia law as it pertains to cases like this. If it turns out he didn't fulfill that obligation, I will be the first guy to step up and call him a scumbag.

He testified in front of a grand jury. He may not of done enough, but I don't think you can say he "washed his hands" of the situation either..

Following PSU code is a weak excuse. In fact I'd say Paterno is just hiding behind it. If you're informed of someone raping a child and you're a decent person, you'd better do a hell of a lot more than just tell your boss. Paterno did not handle the situation correctly at all and regardless of whether he broke the law, he should be fired from Penn State.

The GA, now assistant coach should be fired as well. He also failed to do enough and should be held accountable.

Unless you can show me evidence that Paterno was aware of Sandusky's deviant sexual behavior before the GA let him know about it, then you have no basis for holding Paterno accountable for anything.

A university police detective and a municipal police detective later eavesdropped on a conversation between the mother and Sandusky in which Sandusky answered "I don't know ... maybe" when the mother asked him if he had touched her son inappropriately. Hmmm.... Surely Joe Pa had no inclination that Sandusky was into showering with little boys since he had only been investigated for it four years earlier. And surely Sandusky stepping down one year later because Paterno informed him he would not be a candidate to succeed him as head coach is completely unrelated.

Also: "[This victim] remembers Sandusky being emotionally upset after having a meeting with Joe Paterno in which Paterno told Sandusky he would not be the next head coach at Penn State and which preceded Sandusky's retirement. Sandusky told the victim not to tell anyone about the meeting. That meeting occurred in May 1999."

The deadspin article was just a compilation and summation of other articles. Don't get caught up in the messenger. Do you really think Paterno had no knowledge of the 1998 investigation?

And the facts out there right now indicate that Paterno did what was legally required of him. Outside of that, I have no other information and personally refuse to demonize under those circumstances.

What did his Penn State bosses do with this report? According to the grand jury report on the child rape in the Penn State locker room, "The records reveal that the 2002 incident was never reported to any officials in contravention of PA law."

That's because 23 Pa. C.S. Section 6311 makes it mandatory to report child sex abuse.

So outside of not doing what was legally required of him, he did everything legally required of him. I am frankly amazed this is not a black and white issue for some. Neglecting to report child abuse is always wrong. Always.

Morally it is arguable that he should do more, but legally he was not in the wrong by reporting the information to his superior. No. What is legally required by state law is to report this to authorities. Failing to do that, Paterno did not do what was legally required of him. He told his boss, his boss did nothing, and Paterno has gone on living his life for the last 9 years knowing nothing came of his half-assed attempt to "report" the incident. Nine fucking years! This is an institutional cover up and Paterno is just as guilty as his superiors.

And that's before we factor in the fact that there was already a similar incident four years earlier that that was swept under the rug by PSU.

If you want to wait to make a call, go ahead. However some of us can see the writing on the wall and right through an obvious cover up. I do not care that he did the bare minimum to save his own neck. Thats an excuse and is something he is attempting to hide behind. He and others chose to save the brand of Penn State football rather than report to the police the rape of a child that occurred on their campus and inside team facilities. That is sickening in itself.

If Penn State has any dignity as a university and believes even in a little in doing what is right, than it will get rid of every single person involved in this.
