actually it is not just me, silva is probably there worst drawing champ, he just doesnt sell well to the public, even with the destruction of franklin twice, leben, hendo, etc...

now with the cote and thales debacle, dana might not even put him in the main event or make him just headline free shows or maybe the tape delayed UK shows

the p4p thing was a gimmick just for anderson, lesnar sells, any LHW sells (chuck, jackson, forrest,etc..) GSP is a canadian superstar and BJ has his following, BJ probably is down there with Silva because he is a 155 champ and the average fan doesnt like LWs, but he still brings in the eye balls with the right match up

silva just blew the p4p gimmick that they gave him

I was joking because you seem to always give Silva a hard time, even before the Cote debacle. I agree though that he's not a huge draw.

he is a great fighter, but his last 2 fights have been rough to watch, not motaviated, no killer instinct, just coasting and happy with point wins

Because that's all he could land without Thales flopping. I know technically that's a great move to keep someone at bay, but in that situation I think Silva was throwing those kicks because it's the only thing he could land without Thales running or flopping to the ground. Of course that's nothing I can prove, but that's my theory.

My last question... Be honest, if this was Pride who would have received the yellow cards in that fight?

they both would have gotten some yellow cards

So was this last PPV indicative of the sport? I'm trying to get into this but I was kind of let down by the last PPV. I've seen other fights that were really great to watch, but I did enjoy the Cane-Cantwell and thought that Kongo looked impressive.

Very Bad PPV for MMA. see if you can find a replay of the strike force event or the last UFC event (UFC 96) both were very good

pretty bad actaully

the last strikeforce was great and it was on showtime

usually the UFC delivers, but this was a bad show, not everyone will be great, but when they are good, there is nothing better IMO

I would watch some UFC unleashed on spike, srikeforce is on Showtime and will do a CBS show, if you have HDNet try and catch DREAM, its a japanese based promotion

dont give up, the sport has a lot to offer

also, the sport is MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and not just the UFC

It's an indication of how imperative match-making is in MMA and that the sport still has a lot of growing to do. There's been some good fights of late, but very few marquee fights that were both ultra-competitive and exciting for any fight fan to watch. There just aren't as many wars between top contenders as there used to be. But anyway UFC 97 wasn't good on paper to begin with, 98 and 100 should serve as a better guage of how exciting the sport can be.

The UFC is running out of options at heavyweight. Seriously. Its not a deep division in the first place, and Silva has cleared it out pretty effectively. The way I see it, they have two options.

Look outside the UFC at some of the MWs that are out there. There is some talent. Guys like Jacarae, Mousasi, Mayhem Miller, Robbie Lawler, and even Melvin Manhoef. The problem is simple - they won't come cheap. Guys like Mousasi and Jacarae are getting good money in Japan, and I'm pretty sure Lawler is now under contract to Strikeforce. Given the none of them - even Lawler and Miller - have real good name recognition to casual fans, its a bad investment. You can't really throw them in against Silva right off the bat and sell PPVs, even if you might get a damned good fight out of it. And building them up is risky and takes time. So they just keep hoping that someone like Bisping will step up and become an elite talent.

The other option is to take the Pride approach - having your champion face un-qualified challengers for the belt really isn't a big deal if you don't headline those fights. Like Rob suggested, even have Silva defending his belt as the second or third main event on a PPV, or on a free show.

The reality is that the UFC seems to be running low on options for the MW division and Silva. The last two Silva fights and the negative reaction to them don't help. At all.

Maia, Akiyama, Okami, Wanderlei coming down to 185 all they really need is maybe 1 or 2 fresh bodys

Maia might get ugly, he would have to pull guard, would be intertesting though if he can get And1 down
