Right now, I am not a fan of the trade. If you look at it from one perspective, Mike Shanahan just sold away the rest of his first round picks for the duration of his contract for one player (in addition to a future 2nd rounder.) Granted, no one knows who the Rams will take with those picks, or how Griffin will pan out, but from a value perspective, I don't like this deal.
Peyton Manning was a long shot. This offensive scheme was not a fit for him, as the Shanahan's want a mobile quarterback. Their biggest bargaining chip was $40 million-plus in cap space so Manning could build his own offense. Plus you have no idea how he will be affected by the neck injury, or how much longer he plays.
Matt Flynn would come with a huge contract, and just as much risk. How along is his development? Can he succeed in a full-time role? Though his mobility would be a plus in the system.
I've wanted to see Kyle Orton in DC since the McNabb situation happened. Orton, while far from a scrambler, can still get out in the open (especially with the help of the Redskins mobile linemen) and excels at throwing the deep ball. That is what the Redskins want to do on offense, and for a team that is still some major holes away from contending, a fine option that involves little risk.
Don't get me wrong, it is something for us Redskins fans to be excited about, but I've drank that kool-aid before with all of the off-season Super Bowls we've won. The only thing that keeps me optimistic is that Bruce Allen has drafted very well for this team, and I think he can succeed without first-rounders to work with.
That, and we finally have someone to invest in as a "franchise" QB. No more Grossman. No more Patrick Ramsey. No more Gus Frerotte. No more "over the hill" guys like McNabb and Brunell. Someone who can grow in this system. Lets just hope the gamble pays off.
The Redskins still need to upgrade the line- Carl Nicks or Ben Grubbs should be at the top of their list, along with a possible replacement for Jammal Brown at RT. Next would be a strong #1 receiver, and both Vincent Jackson and Marques Colston fit the bill. Follow that up with the secondary, as we will need to replace LaRon Landry (and possibly OJ Otogwe) as well as beef up the corners. This is still a team that is a long way from contending, but they can come a long way this off-season.
