fwiw, It was a pretty big deal at the time, both here and as a major talking point on ESPN and the like. It didn't last very long in the media because obviously everybody moved on to Super Bowl hype due to the timing.

Not sure why any of this matters much in the grand scheme of this debate here, because it doesn't matter if the fans noticed bounty hunting taking place or not. Saying other players are trying to hurt people irregardless of bounties is a non point, too.

ESPN is now running a story on how the "community of New Orleans" is dealing with the fallout to Bountygate. Has a recovery slant to it, as if your football team getting punished for unethical behavior is in any way equatable to a natural disaster (that happened seven fucking years ago, but I digress).

Someone just dropped the "with all this city has been through" line on top of it, to further drive home the stupidity.

ESPN, stop doing this. New Orleans residents, stop indulging this. It's beneath you and it's beneath the great city that NO is.

I cant fathom arguing the NFL is reflective of the general population. TBU is right these guys are a bunch of wild nut jobs especially on defense. You have to be on some level to slam your body into another guy for a living. I understand completely what hes saying in regards to that desire to inflict pain. I wanted guys to tear up and not want to go my way..as a WR I wanted LBers worried sick that I was going to smash there facemask in on a run play.

Bounties skew that line. If you realize these guys are that crazy and driven to hurt all the more reason NOT to give them outside financial reasons to occasionally go that extra mile.

Isn't inflicting pain and causing injury essentially the same thing? I'm sure your not talking about a skinned knee or something. You're talking about knocking the shit out of someone. I guess I don't see a huge difference between "I'm going to put this motherfucker on his ass" and "I'm going to put this motherfucker out of the game". They are both pretty extreme attitudes to have, and both put the opponents in danger of serious injury. I guess that's where I don't see eye to eye with the rest of you.

I think bounties are a pretty disgusting and unethical concept, and naturally lead to behavior above and beyond the natural violence of the game.

The Saints also had specific language laid out in these bounties that specified cash pay outs for "cart offs". If you don't have a problem with that, then you are sub human.

And again, yes, I think players are extra motivated to play differently when bounties are on the table. OTHERWISE BOUNTIES WOULD NOT EXIST. Are you seriously this dense?

Here's another analogy you won't understand, since you think NFL players are trained killers trying to kill each other anyway. Companies give out sales bonuses to employees to add extra motivation to increase sales. Of course, these employees are already trying to make sales, very hard in fact, but the bonus system gives them extra incentive to try harder.

In the case of the Saints, you have coaches giving players money to try harder to injure people. TO TRY HARDER TO INJURE PEOPLE. CART OFFS. How is this not registering with you? Of course liberties will be taken if money is on the table. It doesnt matter if the hits are clean, dirty, flagged, unflagged. Do you really not see the morality, sociological, and decency issues here? Drop this macho act of NFL FOOTBALL TOUGH GUY RAWR for a second.

It doesnt even matter if a single player on the Saints even went the extra mile to attempt to injure somebody, although anybody with a functioning brain who has a semblance of common sense knows that they did. Once a bounty is in place, that's it, you lose all benefit of the doubt, and it has to be assumed that they were blood hunting.

Of course, this is how it played out in your mind:

Vilma: "Here is $10 grand to take out Favre. Must be cart off. Injure that honky."

Player: "Hey that's cool! Since i'm sub human and actively trying to injure people every snap, i'll take that money if the injury happens completely organically and within the rules with a nice clean hit! I won't try any harder to injure the man, because as you know, i'm already trying my hardest to hurt people!"

Player #2: "Hmm, I dont know Jonathon. $10,000 isnt very much money. Didn't you know that we are all millionaires? Every. One. Of. Us. Plus, ROger Goodell will fine me more than $10k if my hit is dirty. Sorry friend, this simply does not motivate me."
