I think the kids leaving was vital to the show progressing any.

The talk between Dexter and the neighbor is true, when you are a single dad, nevermind of three, you basically flush your life down the toilet. I mean, sure, they could have the kids there and Dexter off killing people, but for a well written show like Dexter is, it'd kill the realism and continuity of it all.

So, exit the kids...onto Dexter going crazy.

Agreed. Not just for the reasons you stated, but also because kid actors are usually so bad at acting that it can be a distraction. Astor was just starting to annoy me, and Cody was a pretty worthless character. Both are fine actors for kids, but to spend an entire season of a show that's so dark focusing on Dexter's relationship with his children would have been kind of jarring.

Glad they are out, and it's just Dex and Harrison again. Now the show can move forward.
 
for the first time in this shows history i would say that last nights show sucked. The season is not showing any real direction and seeing aster and cody trying to act is incredibly painful to watch. they are terrible and i hope we dont see them again anytime soon.

they are trying to show some story lines to angel and lagaurta....and even the story with his sister and her partner, but both are very weak

yeah I have to agree I didn't care for last nights episode. I mean I was never a huge Rita fan, but the show seemed to me to be missing something.
 
I liked last night's episode, it gave a final bit of closure to last season and started a bunch of storylines for this season.

- Closed the FBI story (somewhat) by showing Dexter wasn't there at the time of Rita's death.
- Closed what would happen with the kids by having them move away to Orlando.
- Opened up a storyline with Dexter possibly being friends with Trinity (although seems very similar to Doaks, which doesn't make me too happy).
- Opened up a new set of murders involving Santa Muerte, which could be good if they don't follow the book.
- Opened up a new killer, although I doubt he lasts long.
- Opened up some romance crap with Leguerta/Angel and Deb/Quinn (although these are crap, as usual).

I think last season needed the most wrapping up of any season because it ended on such a shock moment. Taking 2 episodes to close it out right and open up the new season was definitely needed. No other season of Dexter ended on such a shock.
 
This episode was great and set things up for the rest of the season it looks like. I wonder what direction they will take with

yeah she is hot. Deb is totally ugly so now with Rita gone its nice to see something nice again.

i thought this show was solid. got real good towards the end and now they seem to have a direction for the season. I am curious to see how things play out with those pics that cop wants to show to the family

I don't understand why Dex doesn't just kill the girl who saw him. What is honestly his plan? Hold her hostage for the rest of her life. Like he's said on numerous occasions, rule #1 don't get caught.

Rule #1 should always override every other rule. Selfish? Probably but you should always do what serves you best before anything or anyone else IMO. Just like he should've said to Doakes, "I'm sorry but this is how it's gotta be. This will be painless." Then give him and that chick the stuff he gave to his dear friend who died of some disease, the key lime pie lady.
 
dexter is seriously bringing the heat so far. i thought season 4 was a masterpiece, and 5 picked right up. it really bounced the show back from a meh season 3. aside from Breaking Bad (which is so good i am sort of continually rewatching it) Dexter is the only show on tv that is in the elite level right now.
