So the legal arguement is that he protected his own reputation and the reputation of the university by doing nothing more than the absolute minimum loegall required with the information...? Isn't that exactly what he is being criticized for? Are there not times when protecting yourself is not worth allowing more children to get fucking raped on Penn State property?

Its also ignoring a fourth option - which would have pursuing the matter through the avenue already taken. It is possible that Paterno pursued it through his superiors but his comments would indicate otherwise. Had Paterno - the most influential and powerful individual within the Penn State community - pressed those above him to do something about the incident, perhaps they would not have found it as easy to go the route of the cover-up? Yet Paterno wouldn't even enforce the "punishment" that was handed down barring Sandusky from using campus facilities...

I want his ass fired....different POV than of that mob. I agree with the speaker on taking down the banners and all that. I also agree with the fact that we need to ask questions and paterno needs to answer them.

And I haven't made more than 7-8 posts in this behemoth of a thread, so STFU. I made my point 2 pages back and I have moved on.

That article is an awesome excuse for inaction. These incidents happened almost for a decade, how long of a investigation is Paterno assuming according to that article for something like this!?!? At some point, you take the guy out of your locker room and shut his office down instead of letting him walk in holding kids hands and talking to 18 year olds. And even thinking about him as successor to your position as a Head Coach.

Federal officials are examining whether Penn State officials violated federal law by failing to report sexual abuse allegations by the school's former football defense coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Justin Hamilton, a spokesman for Education Secretary Arne Duncan, confirmed to NBC News that the department was looking into whether there were possible violations of a federal law called the Clery Act. It requires colleges and universities to publish and distribute information about criminal offenses -- including sex offenses -- that are reported to school authorities.

U.S. Rep. Patrick Meehan, R-Penn., who represents the district where Penn State is located, called Tuesday for such a probe in a letter to Duncan after a grand jury report charged that two senior school officials had failed to report allegations that Sandusky had sexually abused a young boy in the locker room of a school athletic building in 2002.

In an interview with the Associated Press this week, Duncan called reports about the school's handling of the allegations "absolutely devastating," adding: "The fact that this was allowed to go for so long is mind-boggling to me."

Sandusky was arrested on Saturday and charged with molesting eight boys over 15 years. In addition, Tim Curley, Penn State's athletic director, and Gary Schultz, the university’s vice president of business and finance, were charged on Monday with failing to report the 2002 incident to the campus police and with perjury. Lawyers for all three men have denied the charges.

According to a grand jury report, a graduate assistant at the school had witnessed an incident in March 2002 in which Sandusky sodomized a naked 10-year-old boy in the locker room shower. He reported the incident to Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, who later relayed information about the matter to Curley and Schultz, who oversaw the campus police. But neither of the two men -- or Paterno -- reported the incident to the campus police or to local authorities. The grand jury report quotes Schultz and Curley as acknowledging being told about an incident that Curley described as "horsing around" in the locker room, but both men denied being told that the incident involved anal sex.

Federal officials view the Clery Act as a lever to prod schools to be more aggressive about investigating and prosecuting crimes on campus. Last March, Virginia Tech University was fined $55,000 for waiting too long to inform students about a gunman on the loose during a 2007 shooting rampage that killed 32 people at the school.

That's what I found funny....most of the people in this thread want Paternos head on a stick (the mob) and jump all over anyone that even slightly disagrees, while a few are willing to let things settle before lumping him in with those admin. I was honestly joking around.

This is where I think you're confused. I dont want Joe Pa's head on a stick any more then anyone else, I said that from the beginning, he is one of many responsible here. I know its easy to think we're picking on Joe Pa or something, but nobody is, its just reality of the situation IMO. Paterno is just the polarizing figure and is going to get the most attention, but he is just one of many in a line of fuck ups here.

I'm with Bob. I would prefer it if this situation gave us something by which I would be feel comfortable removing Paterno from any degree of accountability. I am no Penn State fan but one can't help but be in awe of his career. He's someone I respect. Or respected, at least. He may have done enough to have no legal responsibility but moral responsibility is a different matter and he's being tried in the court of public opinion. So far, its a landslide against him. There seems to be real, genuine anger over this amongst the public. Look at some of the reactions here - I would guess that few of those posters who are truly angry over this and feel Paterno should be held accountable feel that way because they have something against JoePa.

As a sports fan, the disappointing aspect is that this becomes Paterno's legacy. His long career, record victories, national titles all matter less because of the perception of this. His legacy is tainted. I cannot imagine any further details coming out at this point which are going to significantly change that for the better.

Im not going through 34 pages, but I seriously hope nobody here is at all defending Joe Paterno. I have neved liked/disliked him anymore than any other coach. So my feelings stem from the grand jury report. Nothing more. I can say after the GJ report. I honestly wish death for Mr Paterno, and every other staff member involved. Paterno is everything at PSU. He is the chain of command. How this wasnt stopped is beyond me.

Crazy that it takes less than a week for such an illustrious career to end. I really have no emotion attached to the story, but they came to the right decision in the end.
