The Roy Nelson/Kimbo fight was the typical shitty MMA fight.

You have one guy that wants to stand and bang and you have one guy who wants to sit on the other guys face for 10 minutes. Incredibly boring.

I can watch shitty boxing matches. I cannot watch shitty MMA fights.

This is why the UFC has implemented rules to encourage stand up fights.

Nobody wants to see two guys rolling around on the ground or just laying there hugging each other for a couple rounds.

agree, they shouldnt let them roll around on the ground and when they clinch standing they should probably break them up, maybe wear bigger gloves also

lol @ game show. I know there's a big disadvantage to fighting under those circumstances, but if you're going to call someone out, talk shit, and you're suppose to be so much better than the guy then get in there and fight. Rip his head off, instead of this panzying around BS.

And another thing - any true fighter wouldn't be satisfied with only doing just enough to squeeze out a victory. That's not what fighting is about. Real fighters don't want to just win, instead they want to dominate their opponent and prove their skill. I didn't see any type of fire or true fighter mentality from Roy in that match.

he didn't completely dominate the fight. he was losing the stand up. he got a take down and got on top and that was it.

pretty much what 99% of mma fans expected. nothing impressive about it.

I don't understand the debate. Kimbo got beat because of a lack of any ground game. . . How Nelson won is moot. So long as he didn't cheat, I'm down.

Also, Rampage isn't at all a good coach, but he brings the lulz. Rashad seems to be a good coach, but I think we've establisehd that the trainers do all the real work.

I hope Kimbo accomplishes something. I really like that guy.

First season watching TUF, and I haven't made up my mind on how much I like it, but they seem to be selling the bullshit to me well. For instance, I sincerely hope that Rashad and Rampage don't fight it out, but that's probably all for TV. As aforementioned, it brings the lulz, though.

the kimbo fight is the main reason MMA fighting will only be so popular not offense to the diehards but same things that some say is boring about boxing, the holding and the techinal fights is also a downfall of MMA ..... can anyone really say thats Kimbo's fight lived up to the hype? i think the universal answer would be no...... a fatguy essentially laid on him and it looked like he was tappin him on the head counting while doing it... i mean Kimbo wasnt injured or hurt, he barely looked like he was in a fight after, but he was "dominated" and TKO'd....... .now what does TUF 10 do? it is a bad representation of the sport if you ask me...... the second fight i saw, the guy McSweeney (sp)was essentially turning and running away from this guy Shivers until Shivers was too tired to even defend himself... and they fought two 5 minutes rounds? and the guy McSweeney (sp) said he had been training a year?

question for the MMA diehards....... is this like the amateurs (Golden Gloves) but on TV?

Kimbo probably should have went into Boxing..... with the right promotion team he could have been a huge draw and got knocked out by Kltichsko ina couple of years for a couple of million..... instead he essentially got his MMA career ended by a reality fighter who might be the best on the show but is far from the best in the world......

Not amatuers, but many of them are low level guys, who I guess would be the equivielent of 4 or 8 rounders. Roy Nelson is one of the few on the show who is considered a legit, major league fighter, and he'll be a mid level heavyweight when he officially gets to the UFC.

To the second bold, everyone said this about Kimbo after Petruzelli KO'd him, too. But the ratings for TUF, in particular the rating for Wednesday, say different:

Last night's Ultimate Fighter did a 3.7 rating and 5.3 million viewers.

The fight itself drew 6.1 million viewers. It was the highest rated MMA television show in U.S. history.

The show did a 6.9 rating in Males 18-34, highest in the history of the station, beating the Ortiz-Shamrock fight in 2006. Kimbo vs. Roy Nelson did a 7.86 rating in the Male 18-34 demo.

In Males 18-34, nothing on television this week except Monday Night Football, even first-run network series, beat it. Only seven network shows during this fall season had as many Male 18-34 viewers.

Between the live show and immediate repeat, there were 6.8 million viewers. Keep in mind this total doesn't include DVR viewership, which last season for the series on average increased viewership 39%.

and this juicy nugget....

Essentially out of out every 12 Male 18-34 in the U.S. last night watched either the live or replay show, comparable to probably the biggest sporting events in our culture other than NFL championship level games.

There is a public facination with Kimbo that can not be denied. And what Dana White is doing is brilliant, positioning him as the hard working underdog, going up against the arrogant bullies. Everyone though Dana brought him on the show to embarrass him, but what they have done is created the black Rocky. UFC fans are going to get behind this guy, and you can bet your ass they will feed him the world's biggest scrub on the TUF Finale in order to get him a win. And that fight will be a ratings bonanza too, and it will draw more viewers than the actual main event.


sidenote: On the boxing points you made, I agree, you have some lame MMA fights, just as you have some lame boxing matches. Especially with guys at this level. What can you do?

And agreed, Kimbo could have gone that route you described, gone 20-0 vs some cans, and got himself a nice fat paycheck vs Klitchko. No doubt about it. Shit, EliteXC was trying to do the same thing with him (which is why some people were outraged, because you just dont do that in MMA), but Ken Shamrock got hurt, and Kimbo met the jab of death and ultimately killed the company.

This is exactly my point, when guys don't come out and fight it gives a horrible impression to viewers who are new to the sport. Also, to say that these guys are lower than amateurs is not true at all. Be honest about it, a lot of the fighters that we've seen so far are succesful pro MMA fighters. There's no excuses that can be made for what we've seen out of some them, especially in the Shivers fight. The contender was setup almost the same way and we didn't see anything like this from those guys, for the most part.

MMA is my favorite sport, but TUF 10 has not been representing the sport very well thus far.

I repeat, MMA does not have a deep talent pool, thats why you get fights like this, the top guys like Fedor, And1, GSP, BJ, Machida, etc...are awesome, but the mid to lower guys are not good for the most part, MMA is to easy to be a 'pro', no real amateur system doesnt help either

it will take 10-20 years minium to get the type of talent we see in other sports

Typical promoter BS. Hype this as the best season, grab 6 million viewers, then actually tell the truth after the fact, 'the fights get good in ep.8'. Practically the end of the season.

Agree about the talent level. Also, JR there has not been a technical fight on display yet in TUF 10. Getting someone down and in a mounted position who has no takedown defense or ground game is not a technical fight. Watch Jon Jones vs Bonnar, Sherk vs Griffin, any BJ Penn fight, GSP, etc to see what technical fighting in MMA is really about. The technical fights are great to watch.

cool, i will have to check these fights out, as i essentially know nothing about techinique of MMA fighting..... when guys get taken down honestly i get bored after about 30 seconds.... i recognize that there is a immense amount of talent and strategy needed for that style/type of fighting but when you see certain fighters do it it looks down right terrible......

So again, I ask you, what did you want Nelson to do? Give up a completely dominant position? I'm baffled by your train of thought here.

Did you want Dean to stand them up? That would have been completely unfair, considering Kimbo was doing nothing to improve his position, and Nelson was throwing blow after blow to his skull. Even if they got stood up, Nelson would have taken him right down again and did the same thing.

This fight was just utter and complete domination, I dont see how anyone could see it different or knock Nelson's performance.
