While thousands of other students took to the streets to tip over news vans and get pepper-sprayed, the current Nittany Lions elected to share their thoughts in a different venue—Twitter. I find it interesting that before this scandal, people were saying Joe Paterno was so old and removed from reality that he was not only not fit to coach the team, but he could barely tie his own shoes.

But yet this same senile old coot was supposedly the grand master of one of the greatest cover ups in history.

I have serious doubts as to what he knew and when he knew it. Reportedly, the details of the grand jury report 'shocked' him to the point he was shaken when he read it (not my words, that's how it was reported).

Too old and senile to call football plays, but perfectly capable of pulling off this great conspiracy. Not sure i'm buying it.

But i'm being very careful before I hop in with the blanket assumptions, because there are tons of unanswered questions, and this story clearly has far more depth than any of us can really understand yet. Saying, "he's in charge, he's Joe Paterno, he had to know, that's that" isn't fair and is derived from emotion and not the facts that we know to be true to this point.

Joe was more powerful than the board of trustees at one point. (they tried getting rid of him and he said thanks but no thanks)To say Joe Paterno knew of one of his best friends for decades perverse fetish is not far fetched at all.

Sandusky "retired" in 1999 after the 1998 allegations took hold. I believe, like most, that Paterno fired him. And I believe Paterno fired him based on allegations that never resulted in an arrest. It's easy to look at 1998 in hindsight and say Paterno didn't do enough to stop a predator, but it is entirely possible that Paterno did not believe he was a predator at that time. Again, all you really had was allegations that led to nothing. But Paterno washed his hands of the guy anyway.

This is all post 2002 (after he was no longer under the employ of Paterno, btw), and it is all under the time frame that I am highly suspicious of Paterno's actions. I want answers, from Paterno, as to why these things took place, and what he knew as far of the extent of Sandusky's perversions by this point in time. He needs to answer to this.

It is strange that Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar never prosecuted Jerry Sandusky on child-rape charges 13 years ago, some speculate, because Gricar was known for being fiercely independent and hard on crime.

But it is even stranger that we cannot ask Gricar why Sandusky was not put behind bars because the tough-as-nails district attorney disappeared in 2005. And though he was declared dead July of this year, his body has never been found.

"People ask why Ray did not prosecute, and I have no problem saying, because he clearly felt he didn't have a case for a 'successful' prosecution," Tony Gricar, Ray Gricar’s nephew , told The Patriot-News.

"... One thing I can say is that Ray was beholden to no one, was not a politician."

This district attorney who had “a bitter taste in his mouth for the [Penn State] program, and its coach,” according to his nephew, and yet never prosecuted Sandusky, disappeared on April 15, 2005, after telling his girlfriend that he was going on a drive.

Ray Gricar’s car was found the next day in a Lewisburg parking lot and his laptop, sans hard drive, was found in the Susquehanna River, according to the Patriot-News.

Ray Gricar’s friend, Montour County District Attorney Robert Buehner Jr., told the New York Times that if the ardent district attorney had committed suicide, he would have wanted his body found. But in the case of possible foul play, no suspects have emerged from investigations.

When it comes to the Sandusky case, friends and former co-workers are all of the opinion that Ray Gricar would never back down from a righteous prosecution.

“No one got a bye with Ray,” Anthony De Boef, who was an assistant district attorney under Gricar for five years told the NY Times. “He didn’t care who you were; he had a job to do.”

And, despite the fact that Ray Gricar had the mother of one of the alleged victims confront Sandusky while police listened, the 1998 report on Sandusky was labeled “unfounded” by the District Attorney’s Office, reports the Patriot-News.

“I would say this about Ray: He would be extremely cautious in proceeding because he wanted to make sure that there would be a reasonable likelihood of conviction,” Buehner told the Patriot News. “You don’t want to go after someone high profile unless you have a compelling case.”

As for the 2002 incident, in which a graduate assistant told Penn State coach Joe Paterno that he witness Sandusky raping a 10-year-old boy in the PSU locker rooms, there is no indication that Ray Gricar was notified, reports the Patriot-Times.

Get this: this changes everything.

Whether or not you obey a higher power, the law, or just your gut, you know that grownups protect children. Grownups listen for children's cries, they don't turn away.

"Penn State" will become a verb: those accused of "Penn Stating" will be allowed no response, because there IS no response, no explanation, excuse or "other side to the story."

"Penn State" is already a brand not unlike "Enron", "Al Qaeda, ...See More"O.J.", "Madoff", and "Lee Harvey Oswald."

Last night, after talking about himself for a few minutes in his front yard, Joe Paterno started inside, turned and advised us to "try to pray a little for the victims." This is beyond creepy, this is not sane.

This is way beyond anything that the NCAA could possibly imagine as "lack of institutional control"--it is "institutional sacrifice of children." It is certainly the end of Penn State football, and the sooner the better if the university wants to save itself. Home football games will draw 100,000, but they'll be protesters from all over. Away games will not be tolerable for anyone to attend.

All the school is doing now is providing lasting video fodder of ignorant student behavior. The longer ESPN takes before treating this like the social catastrophe it truly is, the lower it sinks.

Maybe years after the soon-to-be-self-enacted "death penalty" the school may come back with club football, or something SMU-like, and wearing hair-shirts.

The best that could happen to Beaver Stadium is that it be reduced to a permanent monument of rubble, because only then will Penn State begin to atone, to show proper humility. Perhaps it could be left as an empty 108,000-seat monument to our basest weaknesses.

Nothing survives this; to struggle against it may be an example of one's humanity, but it delays the start of the university's long long journey back. Only time can help this institution, but nothing can change what it must go through.

Why do I know this?

Because I am an old father of young children, and a coach of young children, and a man, and the nightmare I can't face isn't missing the warnings, the signs, or the cries for help, it is suspecting and keeping silent.
