Paterno knew, and he essentially fired the guy. It's likely the reason he fired him.

Anything that happened after was while Sandusky was not under the employ of Paterno. It is entirely possible that Paterno was disgusted with Sandusky, didn't want him around, and when McQueary came to him in 2002, he went to the brass and basically said, "I told you fuckers, now do something about it". It seems like the brass was more interested in covering up for Sandusky than Paterno ever was. The question I want answered, is why? And what exactly was the dynamic of the Paterno/Sandusky relationship after 1998, and after 2002? Remember, 1998 was mearly an allegation. You can't judge anyone on what we know now. He fired the guy based on an allegation. The school banished him in 2002. What I want to know, is why was he still hanging around?

See but this is where it gets tricky. Should we give JoePa credit for "washing his hands" of Sandusky, even though he went on living knowing that Sandusky was still doing this to kids? He asked him to quietly step down, isn't that kind of letting him take the easy way out? Isn't that putting his friend's reputation above the well being of the poor victims?

Penn State's response was basically "keep this off school grounds" ... Their only concern was for their institutional reputation, and not for the well being of the kids, and that is disgusting.

If more is done in 1998, maybe the 2000 incident never happens. If more is done in 2000, maybe the 2002 incident never happens, etc.

I'm not gonna give credit to JoePa for "handling" this in 1998 if his idea of handling this was to say "okay you can't work here anymore, and please try to keep this shit to yourself" ...

The Pennsylvania Governor was the former DA who led the investigation into Sandusky previously.

Press secretary Kevin Harley said Tuesday that Corbett has so far withheld comment partly because he formerly directed the investigation as the state's attorney general, the job he held before January.

Another thing I was thinking about. Do you guys think the NCAA will punish the program in some way like loss of scholarships or being banned from bowl games? I'm not familiar with where the line is drawn in regards to NCAA violations, but if they can ban USC for Reggie Bush taking money, they better ban PSU for not reporting child rape.

Don't worry everyone, Penn State has changed their scheduled "white out" to a "blue out" for this Saturday's game so they can "raise awareness" of child abuse! What a great solution! About time somebody around there decided to raise awareness for child abuse. Everyone wearing blue for a few hours will totally make this better.

Cmon. What would you have them do? There is still football to be played, and it's the only place the current players will be able to get away from all of the allegations for a couple of hours. Penn State's fans, players, and those associated with the football program that are innocent (if any) are in an extremely fragile situation. How would you handle it if it happened to LSU?

But at this point, nothing would shock me in the sports world anymore. Hell, Notre Dame coaches could be molesting little boys for all I know. Penn State has always been regarded, at least by me, as one of the few Universities in Division I sports that does it "the right way." Who the fuck knows anymore.

Well for one, I'd be calling for the jobs of everyone involved instead of rallying "in support of OUR legend" outside the head coach's house like these idiots are doing, and for two, I wouldn't be stupid enough to think that everyone wearing the same colored t-shirt makes up for a decade of school-sanctioned child abuse. As for you thinking Penn State was "doing it the right way," they managed to foster that perception by having their backwards police department and school administration sweep heinous crimes such as these under the rug for decades. Is it any shock that we started hearing about more and more Penn St. players getting arrested once the internet age emerged?

Who is implying that it does? What would you rather have them do? Yeah some fans are circling the wagons hard regardless of what is being brought out but by and large the PSU fan base and university(person by person) is innocent in all of this and if they want to try and turn this awful situation into some sort of a positive moving forward or show support or that they don't condone the actions of those that represented them then they have the right to do so.

We get it, you're pissed off and disgusted but that doesn't mean that fans can't do something to show unity against something that directly affected a place that they have poured a lot of money, and heart into(the school). Does it change what's happened? No. Does it make up for what happened? No...and I don't think anyone is saying otherwise.

and that means exactly what? Anything they wanted him out was based upon lackluster recruiting efforts by "PSU" standards and the fact that he really doesn't recruit anyway. Like I said, the consensus seems to be that more want him out more than ever...this just made more fans want him out and now his legacy is tarnished no doubt.

I've been a Penn State fan for 38 years. In the past 48 hours I've gone through a range of emotions, starting with maybe a little bit of denial, to anger, and now just absolute disgust.

Joe Pa and Penn State has represented to me everything that was right with college athletics. He's also a rare link to my childhood. I can't say that I can still put on my favorite show when I was a kid, but I can put on a Penn State game and see a man standing on the sidelines or lead a team through a tunnel that has done it as long as I can remember.

Many of you have no idea what that's all about, because most of you are fans of college teams that have coaching carousel every couple years and have no idea what that bond means. Therefore you couldn't possibly understand why we night be a little behind (no pun intended) in joining the mob and calling for his head.

Most of you had a predisposition on Paterno which made it easy for you to jump all over him. That's fine, there were people that have had not liked Paterno because of his supposed holier than thou national image since most of your grandfather's hey day. The national outcry doesn't suprise me.

I've gone on record in this forum saying he should step down. I still agree with that. However after thinking about it I'll expound on this further. I think he should of left 15 years ago. I've always been the first guy to jump up and scream at anyone that thought the admin should step in and replace him. I thought his years of service gave him the right to leave on his own terms.

But I was wrong, and the more I think about it the more my stance was bred from selfishness. I couldn't let it go. But from my perspective now, they would have done him a favor by letting him go 15 years ago.

The fact of the matter is he's been in a figurehead position at this school for some time. Until now I didn't see any harm in it. But there was more than being just a recruiting bargaining chip and and living breathing monument when you still hold the position of head coach. I've thought about this a lot, and I have a hard time believing that he didn't think he was doing the right thing. I think he was possibly too out of touch to know what the right thing actually was.

It's abundantly clear to me that this situation was way over his head. For his sake, and the sake of the program, he needs to be let go. It tears me to pieces to say it, but he has to go.
