This is why it's acceptable in that context (and with that said, if somebody was opposed to MMA/boxing/submission wrestling/kickboxing/etc, because of the violence, I wouldnt argue with them so long as they were consistent in being opposed to all fight sports).

The goal of a football team is to outscore the opponent. The goal is not to inflict damage. The team that hits harder does not win. The team that injures more people does not win. People getting hurt during NFL games is a byproduct of the game, not the goal.

And none of that has anything to do with placing bounties on people anyway.

But again, as long as you believe that NFL players are actively trying to hurt each other, this is pointless.

It's a huge byproduct, though.

There is a certain importance and value placed on how physical a team is for good reason. You can't deny that.

But I agree, this has nothing to do with bounties.

If I worked for the NFL or if I was Roger Gooddell then I would be appalled by this and strike down because it would give me and the organization a bad name.

Because I'm not a part of it, I don't care about it so I'm not appalled by it. Nor am I shocked by it. I actually think this is pretty common in the NFL and I'm surprised that we haven't heard about this before. I almost expect this to happen in a league that encourages and glorifies violent hits and aggressive play.

The main reason the Saints fucked up and deserve stiff punishment is because they were warned. When the NFL first found out about this, they weren't even going to do anything, but since the Saints continued to do it they deserve to be punished harshly.

No, but the Saints will be punished harder because player safety is a hot button item in Goodell's NFL.

The weak slap on the wrist the Pats received was a disgrace, but it's not hard to figure out. The last thing the NFL needed was credibility issues, so the weak punishment in effect downplayed the act. They weren't about to ban people or suspend the hoodie or take away championships, because that would have made the story a thousand times bigger. They really just wanted it to go away and for people to stop asking questions.

The thing about Spygate, is that can will be opened up a couple of decades from now, when these coaches are out of the game, and people need some cash and decide to write books or go on TV shows. Nobody is going to cross the hoodie now, not while he's still in the league and not while the people who know all the shit that went down still want jobs and want to be around the NFL.

I find it hard to believe that filming the Jets a couple of times from the upper deck, and filming the Rams goal line offense practice at the SB was the full extent of what happened during that era. Interesting that the Rams had one trip to the goal line in that entire game, and it took them six plays to score.

Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams had a bounty on Colts quarterback Peyton Manning in Super Bowl XLIV. But while it didn’t result in an injury to Manning, his former coach in Indianapolis believes it wasn’t the first time that knocking Peyton out of a game would have gotten a player paid.

Tony Dungy of NBC’s Football Night in America tells PFT that he believes the Titans had put a bounty on Manning.

“I know they had them in Tennessee,” Dungy said via text.

Williams worked for the Oilers/Titans through 2000 under coach Jeff Fisher. Dungy became coach of the Colts in 2002, when a realignment of the divisions put the Colts and Titans in the newly-created AFC South, pitting the two teams against each other twice per season.

Coincidentally, Fisher and Williams have now been reunited, in St. Louis. Which will make even more interesting a decision by Manning to sign with one of the Rams’ NFC West rivals: the Cardinals, Seahawks, or 49ers.

Even more coincidentally, Dungy explained during a 2011 preseason edition of Football Night in America that he believes a 2006 hit on Peyton Manning first caused his ongoing neck problems.

The man delivering the hit? Phillip Daniels. His team? The Redskins.

The defensive coordinator at the time? Gregg Williams.

That said, Dungy emphasized that he doesn’t know whether the Redskins were using bounties under Williams. But Dungy was clear in his belief that the Titans used such a system.
