Saints Defense maintained a Bounty Program

Don't get your roided up panties in such a twist there Lattimer. This isn't a discussion about where Favre sits on the GOAT list, this is about the Saints being guilty of illegal hits on QBs during the 2010 playoffs. The mention of Favre's name as a victim of said bounty program is germane to the conversation going on in this thread.



It's a good thing you don't work for the NFLPA or the league office because there were $30,000 in fines in those hits that are in your clip. If you don't think the shots to the knee and ankle area that produced the injuries shown in the photo weren't dirty, then you are just trolling.


I know what I saw because I was at the game. They were cheering and high fiving each other when Favre took a dirty shot like the one where he was driven to the turf and the high low shot that knocked him out of the game. When that one happened and Favre was limping off of the field the reaction on the Saints sideline made it obvious something was going on. NFL sidelines do not normally cheer for injuries to opponents because it is bad karma.

Illegal/dirty are not the same thing, and besides, i'm pretty sure the Saints were fined for those hits, and I recall those hits being a pretty big talking point in the week following the game. There is little question the Saints were headhunting Favre, and now we know Vilma had $10k on his head. Probably explains the legal, but highly questionable and unnecessary cheap shot on Warner the week before, too.

At any rate, any borderline hit or penalty the Saints have committed over the last three years now immediately has to come into question, and Payton & Loomis can only blame themselves.

As mentioned in my post there were multiple roughing penalties from hits on Favre in that game and $30K in fines levied by the league.

Also, while the money is an issue the real issue is rewarding players for injuring opposing players. I'm sure $100 isn't anything to most NFL players, as the most of them make thousands upon thousands, but the real issue is the culture of boarderline dirty play that Williams created. This culture is a direct punch to the face to the image the NFL is trying to maintain, which is player safety.

A couple of thoughts here:

1) Some of you are retards.

2) The bottom line is that whether you agree or not, you like it or not, paying a bonus to players that is not written in the contract is illegal under NFL rules. The Saints will be punished for this.

3) We're naive to think this doesn't happen in a lot of other places (although maybe not to the extent of the coach getting involved). These players have a lot of money and once an idea spreads, it catches fire.

4) The rewards were for knocking players out of a game, interceptions and forcing fumbles. That doesn't really dull the blow, but it should be mentioned.

5) I know it's cliche, but football is a violent game. And most of the guys who play it are a little bit crazy. If you ran into a person full speed and speared them into a fruit stand walking down the street, you're going to jail.

6) The difference between saying "We're trying to intimidate the other team through violent, aggressive play" and "We're trying to injure a player" is a thin, thin line. Everyone says A, not many people openly say B.

Which is what I've been contending since the beginning of this thread.

If you don't want these things to happen, the game has to change. Players are on record saying they'll get up out of a pile and purposely try to re-injure a player who had a previous injury. Players are taught to dive at knees, cut block, and blind-side players. Helmet-to-helmet hits and launching (FINALLY) are being taken care of, but that was almost common practice down the field against receivers. And even with the rules, players continue to do it out of habit.

The NFL is doing what they can to limit these things, but it will never change unless the game does. I firmly believe it.

$10,000 in tax free no agent fees cash is still a pretty big incentive to a lot of guys that grew up dirt poor. It's also the bragging rights in the locker room of being the person that collected. Guys in biker gangs will kill somebody just to sew a 50 cent patch on their vest. Not a stretch to think $10,000 would motivate somebody to do bad things.
